These licensing rules, while an important signal of accountability in some professions, are largely inefficient or “pants-on-head stupid,” if I were to use the technical term. Matthew Yglesias at Slate discovered several licensing rules that make as much common sense as a diamond-studded condom. For example, he wrote, “New York barbers need 884 days of education and apprenticeship.”

Bruin a Dynamo at Professional Soccer

Former IU standout forward Will Bruin, who was drafted 11th in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, is currently in his second season with the Houston Dynamo. IDS reporter Alex McCarthy caught up with Bruin just before the Dynamo took on the New England Revolution on May 19. Bruin scored his team-leading fifth goal in a 2-2 draw.

5 Bloomington area men charged in mob attack at Chicago area restaurant

An unpublished restaurant security video viewed by the Chicago Tribune of the bizarre Saturday afternoon melee had no sound — but it screams with images of fear and aggression. It was an attack that spilled from Internet chat rooms to the floor of the small Ashford House restaurant, bringing to the forefront an underground and nationwide battle between violent anti-racism groups and white supremacists.

Griffy Lake to be drained for dam repairs

Fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking — if you haven’t taken advantage of what Griffy Lake Nature Preserve has to offer, you had better do it soon. The small reservoir just north of campus will be drained this summer for repairs on the reservoir’s dam.

Crossroads Classic to remain in Indy through 2014

Following a successful debut in 2011, the athletic directors at Butler, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue universities have agreed to a two-year extension that will keep college basketball’s Crossroads Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis through 2014.
