Bloomington boasts nearly a dozen thrift stores that sell used clothing, shoes and other attire at affordable prices.

Last summer, I pitched an idea for a new show to the Travel Channel. The premise is there’s a college student who loves to travel, and each week, he would go to all these different places across the globe and discover things about the cultures he visits and make recommendations on hidden beauties to see in different lands.

Professor earns prestigious award

IU Jacobs School of Music professor Claude Baker was named the 2008-09 Paul Fromm composer-in-residence for the American Academy in Rome two weeks ago. The Academy is a “very famous hotbed for composers at the beginning of their career,” said Don Freund, acting chair of the composition department.

Comedy Caravan celebrates 25 years

There was barely a dry eye in the back room of Bear’s Place Monday night as audience members laughed themselves to tears at the 25th anniversary performance of the weekly Comedy Caravan shows. With a history of performers like Jeff Foxworthy, Ellen DeGeneres and Tim Allen, Bear’s Place has been a destination for stand-up comedy fans on Monday and Saturday nights for the past quarter-century.

Jam band to perform Thursday at IMU

NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in a possible drug-related death, police said. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

Historical harps

Six historical harps now have a home in the Willam and Gayle Cook Music Library. The instruments were donated to the University in 1982 by late world-renowned harpist Mildred Dilling, who’s known as the “First Lady of the Harp.”

BOLOGNA, Italy – This weekend, I am going to miss one of my favorite Bloomington events – the PRIDE Film Festival at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The weekend allows the local community, gay, straight and questioning, to come together to discuss issues and new ideas and throw one sweet dance party. The film series showcases the talents of independent filmmakers and documents the struggles and triumphs of queer culture. I don’t pretend to be an expert in the field of film studies, but there is something about an independent film, especially a short, that I find irresistible.

Quirky comedian cracks up sold-out crowd at Buskirk-Chumley

Negotiations pressure writers to come to a compromise
