Tournament success may depend on 'now veteran' freshmen

With head coach Jerry Yeagley returning a steady group of players from last year's College Cup team, it was unclear what kind of impact IU's heralded recruiting class would make in their first season. Now with the regular season in the books, there is no question that the freshmen will have a large role if IU is to make it through the Big Ten Tournament and to their fifth consecutive College Cup. "We have a lot of talented young players," Yeagley said. "Those freshmen are now veterans with a season under their belt so we don't expect them to make freshman mistakes any longer. These are guys who have played at a pretty good level before and hopefully won't be in awe."

Seniors reflect on career, prepare for last dance

Some may look at the four Final Four appearances and two national championships the men's soccer team has produced during the past four years and speculate that the squad's senior class must be spoiled rotten. But backs Josh Rife and Ryan Hammer, midfielders Bobby de St. Aubin and Tyler Hawley and goalie Colin Rogers have paid their dues, and they do not take anything for granted. "What makes this group (of seniors) unique is that all five of them had to prove themselves here," head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "They didn't come in as stars."

Varied training methods unite runners

Different runners specialize in different distances and events. But Coach Judy Bogenschutz said she is seeking a balance on her cross country team. "First thing I tell all of them in the fall is that they are 5K and 6K runners," Bogenschutz said. "They have to say that they're running this distance today and they have to run it well." Sophomore Audrey Giesler is one of the middle distance runners. She also said she tries to separate the two seasons. "I have to have the mentality that I'm a cross country runner now and not worry about track." Giesler said.

Team finishes 3rd in tourney

Playing in their fourth and final tournament of the fall, the Hoosiers posted their top finish at the Pine Needles tournament, which concluded Tuesday. After placing fourth in all three of their previous tournaments, the Hoosiers moved up a spot, finishing third. But coach Sam Carmichael said he saw room for improvement. "I think we had the same play we've had all fall, very inconsistent," Carmichael said. "Having to count an 80 the first round and an 82 the second round was just really hard on our scores. If I looked at the scores, I'd have to say we're not playing as well now as we were at the first of the year."

Purcell excels in tough situations

The men's cross country team has an important meet this weekend in Terre Haute at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. So far this season, the Hoosiers have not been able to put together a team effort where each member runs well. But one sophomore, Nathan Purcell, has been able to consistently turn out good races at big meets. In his first year at IU, Purcell was red-shirted, but that was the least of his obstacles. One day he was leaving class for home with a teammate in front of Woodburn where the two had ridden their bikes to class that day. As they were leaving, Purcell was struck by a car on Seventh Street. He was not injured severely, but he did have to spend the night in the hospital.

Hoosiers fall to Life University

The hockey team is still trying to figure out what happened this weekend. Fifty-four minutes into Friday night's game, the Hoosiers were comfortably holding on to a 4-2 lead over the defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II champions, Life University. Sophomore goalie Charlie Pulley was a force in the net, robbing the Running Eagles on several opportunities.

Sophomore likely out for season; decisions abound

Mike Roberts might have a more serious injury to his right leg than first thought. A sophomore forward, Roberts hurt himself Oct. 31 in practice with what was originally called a sprained ankle. But now Roberts might have a chipped bone in his right leg. For the past several days, he has worn a black walking cast that stretches from his foot to his knee.

Freshman earns way into lineup, finishes season strong

Team falls in conference opener

Soccer team finds net in offensive outburst

The men's soccer team found its offense Sunday with a 6-0 shutout of the IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis Jaguars at Bill Armstrong Stadium, marking the end of IU's regular season.

Volleyball looks to cash in on recent success

After two long and successful games at home last weekend the women's volleyball team hits the road Friday, traveling to Northwestern and Wisconsin for another weekend of Big Ten play. IU is 6-14 overall and 3-9 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers' last two conference games proved to be a confidence booster for the team as they defeated Iowa in four games (24-30, 30-28, 30-20, 30-27) and nearly defeated Minnesota in five games (30-27, 30-32, 22-30, 30-19, 10-15).

Hoosiers prepare for Michigan

Freshman freestyler David Bryant is eager to take on a Michigan team that all but ignored him during his college search. While Bryant eventually ended up at IU and placed first in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles in the team's opening victory against Evansville, he sent an e-mail to the Michigan coach looking for information and never heard back. Now he and the rest of the Hoosier squad, are eager to show the Wolverines what they missed.

Tennis duo gets the job done

Junior Karie Schlukebir and sophomore Linda Tran have been tearing through the competition this year with an 11-1 record in doubles for the IU women's tennis team. This is no surprise for the duo that went 8-1 in Big Ten play last season. "They're off to a really good start this year," coach Lin Loring said. "They're doing the little things better. Their serves have been better. Their returns have been better. They've always communicated well together."

Women's soccer heads to Lexington in finale

The IU women's soccer team will conclude its ninth season this weekend as it travels to Lexington, Ky. to play the Kentucky Wildcats, and come home to host the Ohio Bobcats Sunday. Neither opponent is in the Big Ten, although the battle involves two border rivals. The Hoosiers enter the weekend 7-7-1 (3-6-1) playing a Kentucky team they are 4-2 against all-time. The Wildcats are 11-6 and 5-4 in SEC conference play. This will be the first time IU has played Ohio, who enters the weekend 10-7 and 9-2 in the MAC conference.

Hoosiers look to pull upset at Big Ten Tourney

Many teams might be discouraged going into a conference tournament after a winless conference regular season. But after a year of improvement, field hockey coach Amy Robertson and her remain positive going into the Big Ten Tournament this weekend in Evanston, Ill. The Hoosiers are the No. 7 seed. IU's most notable improvements in its second year have come in the net with junior Molly Pulkrabek and freshman Katie Kanara, keeping the Hoosiers close in nearly all their matches. Kanara broke the IU record for saves in a season, recording her 80th save in an 8-1 loss to Iowa two weeks ago. Pulkrabek is right on Kanara's heels, as she posted her 78th save of the year last weekend against Penn State.
