Sophomore makes waves on US team Softball adds 2 coaches to staff Miller questionable for World Championships
NEW YORK -- While baseball negotiators intensified their meetings in hopes of completing a deal, teams began pushing back travel plans to prepare for a possible strike Friday. The Chicago White Sox called off their Thursday charter to Detroit and said they would travel Friday only if there isn't a walkout. Boston rescheduled its charter to Cleveland for Friday, too, but St. Louis will travel Thursday for the following day's game at the Chicago Cubs, which would be the first game affected by a strike.
After being tabbed No. 1 in two different preseason college soccer rankings, the IU men's soccer team traveled to the Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne Soccer Showcase in Fort Wayne last weekend to take on Kentucky and Virginia in a pair of exhibition games. IU was ranked No. 1 by both the College Soccer News and the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America in their rankings released earlier this month.
After months of research and surveys by the Athletic Department, the university unveiled IU's new colors and logos last spring. Monday, the new uniforms for IU's athletic teams with the new looks were unveiled at a Varsity Club event held in Indianapolis. The athletic department has gone back to the old cream and crimson and the block IU symbol. Athletic Director Michael McNeely said the new logo was the most recognizable icon by fans of IU and its athletics.
IU football fans may have grown accustomed to watching Antwaan Randle El hurdle, juke and shuffle as the most prolific quarterback in IU history. But along with new uniforms, fans will get a new style of quarterback starting Saturday when senior Tommy Jones lines up under center. The stand-up pocket passer was named IU's starting quarterback for the Hoosiers opener Saturday against William & Mary.
In the hottest-recorded Brickyard 400 in history, Bill Elliott blazed to victory Sunday, winning the ninth NASCAR race in Indianapolis in Elliott's 680th career race. Elliott credited his crew for his dominating performance.
SAN DIEGO -- Russell Branyan homered three times and scored the go-ahead run on Brandon Larson's ninth-inning single off Trevor Hoffman as the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Diego Padres 15-10 Sunday.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Tony Stewart's temper got the best of him yet again Sunday when he was involved in a physical altercation with a photographer following the Brickyard 400.
CHICAGO -- Mark Prior was as surprised as anybody when he found out that he was going to get a chance to pitch his first career complete game.
IU point guard Tom Coverdale was named to the 2002 Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Tour Team after leading the Hoosiers to the NCAA Championship game. The 6-2 senior ranked second on the tour team with a season average of 11.9 points per game and was third in the Big Ten Conference in assists (4.81 apg) and seventh in steals (1.54 spg).
Race driver Kurt Busch shows his displeasure with fellow driver Jimmy Spencer (41) after crashing in the third turn during the Brickyard 400. Busch thought Spencer forced him into the third turn wall.
Dane Fife wasn't selected at the NBA draft last month, and most basketball fans don't expect to see him wear an NBA jersey anytime soon. But the former Hoosier has worked hard this summer to keep his NBA dreams alive. Fife played for the Houston Rockets' summer league team at the Southern California Summer Pro League July 7-21 in Los Angeles. Although still a long shot to find his place in Houston's backcourt, Fife impressed the Rockets staff during the eight-game stint. Rockets assistant coach Melvin Hunt said Fife conducted himself like a professional throughout the two-week tournament.
The NASCAR series invades Indianapolis beginning Friday through Sunday. The Craftsman trucks race at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) at 8 p.m. on Friday, with the Busch Series cars following at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
