Hoosiers drop Big Ten opener, but win next three

Friday night belonged to Penn State. The Nittany Lions came to Bloomington and took advantage of an IU squad bitten by the injury bug. Penn State won nine of 10 bouts to beat the Hoosiers by a final score of 37-4. It was the Penn State wrestling program's largest margin of victory since they joined the Big Ten Conference.

Loss at Purdue disappointing

WEST LAFAYETTE -- The No. 14 men's track and field team stumbled in a three-way meet involving No. 13 Purdue and Ohio State Saturday. The team traveled to Purdue for the second indoor meet of the season. After controlling the opening meet of the season at Michigan, the team struggled in their first competitive meet of the season. An unimpressed coach Marshall Goss said he thought the team did not show an impressive team mentality.

Defeat over Notre Dame 'a great day for IU tennis'

IU defeated No. 27 Notre Dame in a close match of the season this weekend. Notre Dame held a 3-2 lead after winning two of three doubles matches and claiming the doubles point, but IU won four of the six singles matches, upsetting the Fighting Irish 4-3.

Hoosiers reeling, looking for answers

The IU women's basketball team dropped two home games over the weekend, a pair of 11-point losses to Wisconsin and Michigan State. IU lost a hard-fought contest, 69-58 to Wisconsin on Friday night at Assembly Hall. The Badgers (4-13, 2-5 Big Ten) held the Hoosiers to 31 percent from the field for the game.

Yeagley to retire

Forty years, 11 trips to the college cup championship, five national titles and one more year to go. Men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley has decided to call it quits after the upcoming 2003 season. Yeagley has amassed an impressive 527-98-40 overall record and has never had a losing season in 30 years of NCAA play.

The IU hockey team got a shot at the No. 1 team in the country but couldn't contain Penn State's high octane offense. TORONTO -- Vince Carter returned and the Toronto Raptors won.

Rowdy Purdue crowd hurts Hoosiers

WEST LAFAYETTE -- The IU men's basketball team had long since left the Mackey Arena floor, but the Purdue team and its fans were still celebrating. The Boilermakers upset the No. 14 Hoosiers 69-47, and were at half court afterwards congratulating each other. Similar to the atmosphere the entire game, the crowd was roaring with approval.

SAN DIEGO -- Just defense, baby! The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't need much more -- for most of the game, anyway. Coach Jon Gruden and his Bucs won the Super Bowl on Sunday, routing Oakland 48-21 in the first matchup of the NFL's best offense against its best defense. The Tampa Bay defense won by a mile, shutting down the Raiders for three quarters and holding on as they made a belated comeback attempt.

Crowd can help fight cancer

On Jan. 12 the women's basketball team (9-6 overall, 2-3 Big Ten) upset Ohio State in front of 2,845 screaming fans. It was the sixth-highest single-game attendance total ever at IU. But 2,845 fans aren't enough for coach Kathi Bennett. She said she wants to see over 5,000 at the game against Wisconsin tonight to break the attendance record.

Coach Kathi Bennett is out $5,000 after the women's basketball team's loss to Wisconsin 69-58, but the money went to a good cause. Her $5,000 donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was the result of a record-breaking crowd in Assembly Hall for a women's basketball game. The goal was to have at least 5,503 fans at the game. That number was shattered as the Hoosiers played in front of 7,986 people on Friday night. People from the community and around the state filed into Assembly Hall to see the game.

Men's track heads to Purdue

Saturday the No. 14 men's indoor track and field team travels to West Lafayette for their most ferocious competition of the young season. The team will face rivals No. 13 Purdue and Ohio State. The meet begins Saturday morning at Lambert Fieldhouse.

Wrestlers limp into Big Ten opener

As the wrestling squad prepares for tonight's Big Ten season opener, they will have to do so without 184-pound junior Ty Matthews. Matthews is undefeated in the 184-pound weight class this year and held the No. 19 ranking in the country at that weight. Matthews was going to face 184-pound Penn State senior Mark Becks, who holds the No. 4 ranking in the nation, but now the Hoosiers will likely turn to freshman Andy Rios.

Hoosiers take perfect record into last meet

After back-to-back thrashings of Big Ten foes Ohio State and Purdue, the IU women's swim team looks to keep their undefeated record and No. 14 ranking intact this weekend as they travel to East Lansing, Mich. The Hoosiers, 6-0 (4-0 in the Big Ten) will take on Michigan State and Penn State in the final regular season conference competition of the year.

IU to open indoor season at home

The women's tennis team will be back in action this Saturday when they host the Western Michigan Broncos and Miami (Ohio) Redhawks in a dual match tournament. IU first takes on the Broncos at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center, and then the Redhawks at 2:30 p.m. following the first match.
