Strickland, Moye, Leach lead team with career-high nights

Three IU players had career nights in three different categories as the Hoosiers pulled out their first home win in over a month Wednesday as they defeated Michigan, 61-56. Sophomore guard Marshall Strickland scored a career-high 21 points on 7-17 shooting, 5-10 behind the arc, to lead the Hoosiers (13-13, 7-8 Big Ten). Senior forward A.J. Moye had 15 rebounds, and senior center George Leach was a presence on the defensive end with seven blocks. "I thought Marshall Strickland was tremendous for their team," Michigan coach Tommy Amaker said. "They made eight threes, and one of our points of emphasis was trying to defend the three-point line, and it doesn't look like we did a good job looking at the percentage they shot."

Hoosier hiatus ends with 61-56 victory

It has been since the Purdue game Jan. 27. One month and five days is how long Hoosier fans had to wait for a win in Assembly Hall. Wednesday night they got it when IU (13-13, 7-8 Big Ten) beat Michigan (16-10, 7-8) 61-56. "We just wanted to get that winning feeling back," sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said. "After you lose a couple of games, everybody gets down. The mood kind of gets down. We just want to get the fans excited again, and get everybody excited about basketball, and we're not done yet."

Rec Sports reinstates intramural swim meet

Thirty-three swimmers turned out for the first intramural swim meet since 1997 Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in the Student Recreational Sports Center. This event used to take place annually, but because of lack of participation, RecSports cut the event. But this year, the intramural swim meet is back by popular demand, said Assistant Director for Intramurals Josh Downing. "We used to have this event all the time," Downing said. "'97 was the last time we had it as an intramural event. We stopped it due to lack of participation, but last year, a group of students came to our intramural sports council and recommended we do this. Then the intramural sports council came to us and said, 'Hey, we should do this,' so that is how this event came about today."

Super-sized recruits

When the 2004 McDonald's All-Americans take to the floor in Oklahoma City, IU's nationally-ranked recruiting class will be well represented. Power forwards Josh Smith and D.J. White will participate for the East team in the March 31 contest.

Hoosiers need a win against Michigan

The Hoosiers are reeling, and so are their chances of making any post-season tournament. Tonight, they get a chance to get back on the winning track and stop their four-game losing streak when they take on Michigan at 6 p.m. in Assembly Hall.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts agreed Tuesday to a $99.2 million, seven-year contract that includes an NFL-record $34.5 million signing bonus. The deal will drop the NFL co-MVP's salary cap number to $8.3 million, saving the team more than $10 million and giving the Colts more flexibility to sign players when the free-agency period opens Wednesday.

Guard has seen it all

Sixth place finish for IU

Entering the final round of the Texas A&M "Mo"morial Invitational Tuesday, the IU women's golf team was only two strokes off the lead. Eighteen holes later, the women in crimson and cream finished their second tournament of the spring in sixth place, just six shots off the winner -- Kansas State.

Familiarity factor to help Hoosiers hoosiers

Being familiar with an opponent has many advantages. Their strengths along with their weaknesses are out in the open. What the foe likes to do in certain situations can come in handy when a close match is winding down. Second home win of season comes at hands of Marion

The Hoosiers defeated their in-state opponent the Marion Knights 9-4 Tuesday to improve to 3-5 on the season. The team had been struggling early on, but they got the bats swinging in the victory and picked up some key hits.

Tae Kwon Do club to hold friendly tournament

For the fourth straight year, the IU Tae Kwon Do club is gearing up for its own tournament. The competition starts at 12 p.m. Saturday. Club teams from DePauw, IU-Purdue University Indianapolis, University of Wisconsin-Madison and two club teams from Purdue are all scheduled to compete.

Hoosiers face Marion at home

The IU baseball team did not play it's scheduled game yesterday against Taylor University due to the weather. The cancellation was due to the wet field, which was ruled incapable of hosting play.

This past weekend, the men's track team took on its conference rivals in the Big Ten Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, finishing sixth as a team with 58 points, four points out of fourth place.

IU second home for 2 Czech tennis players

Oftentimes, teams boast players from the same state, maybe even the same city, but not usually the same foreign country. The Hoosiers do that in claiming two players from the Czech Republic with freshman David Bubenicek and junior Jakub Praibis. Bubenicek, a native of Kromeriz, Czech Republic, was mainly drawn to IU for the opportunity to play tennis at a Big Ten school. The education that IU offers was also a factor, as there are many quality programs here that helped persuade Bubenicek in becoming a Hoosier. Though his time on the court has been limited due to injury, he made the most of his only singles appearance of the season in a key victory against Middle Tennessee State Jan. 24, which helped the Hoosiers to a 4-3 victory.

Home finale heartbreak

It was like David and Goliath, the 4-12 Hoosiers going up against the No. 22 Michigan State Spartans. Facing a 51-48 deficit, IU sophomore Cyndi Valentin's last-second, running three-pointer shot into the air like the aforementioned rock and struck its mark -- only this time, Goliath got up. After hitting the three pointer at the final second to force the game into overtime, the Spartans won, 60-51. The Hoosiers fought the Spartans doggedly in the second half, never trailing by more than four points in the period and even taking the lead for five minutes. Following a lay-up by MSU junior Kelly Roehrig with nine seconds left in the game, IU was facing a three-point deficit until Valentin connected on a deep three pointer with no time left on the clock.

The IU (4-8) softball team members headed into the Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic this weekend brimming with confidence, but after Saturday's double-header, their egos were a bit deflated.

Hoosiers drop 2 of 3 as bats fail

Despite solid pitching efforts, the Hoosiers managed only one win in a three-game road trip against Murray State, Kentucky and Navy this weekend. In search of their first road win, the Hoosiers had trouble finding much success at the plate, going a combined 11 for 64 in the first two games.

IU places 5th at Big Ten Indoors

Penn State ended Michigan's try for three straight Big Ten Indoor Indoor Championships Sunday as the Nittany Lions won their first indoor title. IU placed fifth, 18 points behind Ohio State and three ahead of Michigan State.
