A Dream Come True

Every four years U.S. Olympic hopefuls from across the nation gather for the opportunity to achieve the first step toward Olympic glory. The U.S. Diving Olympic Trials, held this weekend in St. Peters, Mo., gave 12 past and present Hoosiers a chance to condense four years of hard work, training and dedication into four days of intense, nail-biting competition.

IU gets new assistant

The men's basketball coaching carousel has stopped -- for now. IU men's basketball coach Mike Davis announced Friday the hiring of Kerry Rupp as an assistant coach for the Hoosiers in 2004-2005. Rupp, 50, will be replacing former IU assistant coach Ben McDonald, who resigned May 12.

Advertisement opens up AD search

The search committee for IU's new athletics director isn't wasting time to find a replacement as an advertisement and Web site were both released Thursday by IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley, the chairman of the search committee.

IU makes strong showing at NCAAs

AUSTIN, Texas -- On the strength of four IU athletes, the men's track team finished 19th at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend at the University of Texas. Junior All-American Aarik Wilson solidified his status as one of the NCAA's top leapers as well as IU's best ever triple jumper. The Fallon, Nev., native began the weekend by finishing third in the long jump with a sizable personal best of 7.97 meters, third all-time at IU.

Search committee distributes advertisement for new athletic director

The committee for the new IU athletic director isn't wasting any time in getting the word out. IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley released an advertisement specifying all qualifications and has called for submissions of nominations or applications. A deadline has been set for July 16, with the position being chosen in August. Included in the advertisement is a Web site address applicants can refer for more information on the athletic department and qualifications for the position. The address for the Web site is www.indiana.edu/~adsearch. Amongst the qualifications listed in the advertisement include a genuine commitment to academic and intercollegiate athletic excellence, and experience in fiscal planning and budget management.

Select Hoosiers head to NCAA Championships

Six Hoosiers have survived both the indoor and outdoor track and field season to arrive in Austin, Texas, for the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. IU's mix of qualifiers covers every discipline of the sport. Four already have All-American accolades from previous seasons, while a fifth makes his first appearance on the national stage. Sophomore All-American Sean Jefferson is a postseason veteran, having been at the apex of every level of competition since high school. After earning his first All-American award at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this fall, Jefferson won the 2004 NCAA Indoor Mile title in grand fashion with a 4 minutes, 0.16 seconds.

Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien fired for paying money to potential recruit

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State hired Jim O'Brien to clean up a disreputable program. On Tuesday, the university fired O'Brien because he admitted he gave a recruit $6,000 five years ago -- not long after he ran off several problem players left over from the previous coach.

Knight agrees to contract extension

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Bob Knight agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep the basketball coach at Texas Tech until 2009. Athletic director Gerald Myers told The Associated Press Wednesday the agreement probably will be signed next week. Knight's contract pays him $250,000 a year and runs through May 2006.

IU divers inch closer to Athens dream

With both IU men's and women's diving teams steeped in tradition, the U.S. Olympic Trials for diving saw a large Hoosier contingent invade St. Peters, Mo., in their quest to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Of the 83 divers to compete in the Trials, 12 either currently attend IU or have graduated from the Bloomington campus.

Smarty Jones goes home with loss

NEW YORK -- Smarty Jones headed back to his home at Philadelphia Park Sunday, still a fan favorite, but no longer undefeated after his upset loss in the Belmont Stakes. After a lonesome walk in the cold rain at Belmont Park, Smarty boarded a van for the ride to Philly. This time, there was no police escort until he got near his home track, and only a few cheering fans outside when arrived.

Cubs, Reds win; NL Central remains tight

CHICAGO -- Greg Maddux gave the Chicago Cubs their third straight strong start, allowing four hits in seven innings Sunday in a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Aramis Ramirez hit a solo home run for the Cubs, who have won two in a row after losing eight of 10. The Pirates have lost seven of eight.

12th hole haunts Overton's finish

Entering the final round of the NCAA Championships Friday, IU junior Jeff Overton was tied for eighth place, sitting at 2-under par. Overton was even-par through the first nine holes making birdies on the first and eighth holes and bogies on the sixth and seventh. The first two holes on the back nine went as planned, with Overton shooting par on both. Next came the par four, 12th. Overton's first shot hooked right into a group of trees.

Heat can't keep Hoosiers from NCAAs

With temperatures hovering at or above 90 degrees, IU men's track team's top stars qualified for the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the NCAA Regional meet this weekend at Louisiana State University. The best result came from junior All-American Aarik Wilson, who set a new personal best and school record in the triple jump en route to a second place finish. His mark of 16.91 meters, while short of the phenomenal jump of winner LeeVan Sands of Auburn (17.30), broke Robert Cannon's 1978 school record of 16.87. Wilson currently ranks second in the nation and will be a strong contender for the NCAA triple jump title. Freshman All-American and Big Ten champion David Neville finished third in the 400 meters. His 45.88 seconds puts him consistently running under 46 seconds and indicates a shot at running even faster at the NCAA Championships.

2 Hoosiers sign Major League deals

With the Hoosier baseball season ending, two of the team's recent graduates will contniue to take their swings. The latest in a long line of talented Hoosier shortstops, IU senior Seth Bynum signed a contract with Major League Baseball's Montreal Expos franchise May 27, officially beginning his professional baseball career.

Overton currently tied for 10th place at NCAA Championships

When junior Jeff Overton teed off at the NCAA Championships Tuesday, he was determined not to shoot himself out of the tournament. Instead he shot an opening round 67 landing him in fourth place on the leaderboard after the first round of play. Although IU's team didn't qualify for the championships, the Big Ten Golfer of the Year qualified for the tournament by finishing as the top individual from a non-qualifying team at last week's NCAA Regionals in West Lafayette.

Doubles duo falls short in Elite Eight

With the season on the line for both IU's men's and women's tennis teams, the women's doubles duo of sophomore Sarah Batty and senior Linda Tran fell in the Elite Eight while men's junior Jakub Praibis fell in the second round of the men's singles championship.

Soggy Indy 500 doesn't dampen spirits

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before Buddy Rice took the checkered flag at the Indianapolis 500 Sunday, the rain had scared off about half of Kevin Kuehn's group of friends from Green Bay, Wis. But Kuehn, sporting a Coors Light hat and a red rain jacket, said after the race that the wait was worth it. "It's Indy," he said, as the track-side screen flashed a tornado warning. "We'll be back next year." The day at the track began and ended with ominous storm clouds and downpours, but somehow, amid a windy, stormy afternoon, there was time for 180 laps and an exciting finish -- a payoff for thousands of soggy, but enthusiastic, race fans.

Batty and Tran advance to final 8

The rest of the IU men's and women's tennis seasons might be over, but individual players on the teams are still leaving their mark on the NCAA singles and doubles championships. With a win Wednesday, the doubles duo of sophomore Sarah Batty and senior Linda Tran advanced to the final eight of the NCAA tournament doubles championship, while junior Jakub Praibis notched his first NCAA tournament win in the men's singles championship. After an opening round victory, Batty and Tran (14-3) advanced to the round of 16 to face off against junior Heather Saluri and senior Anda Perianu, the No. 17 team from Oklahoma. The Hoosiers had to go the distance in their first match, and a repeat performance would be needed in pursuit of a final eight spot.

Coaching legend finishes his career

Just a few months after losing IU soccer coach Jerry Yeagley to retirement, IU must say goodbye to another coaching legend. The IU athletics department announced on its Web site Wednesday that Sam Carmichael's 2003-04 season as IU women's golf coach would be his last.

Penske goes for 4th in a row

INDIANAPOLIS -- The sight was enough to make Indy 500 regulars gape in wonderment. There, climbing the fence alongside 2002 race winner Helio Castroneves, was team owner Roger Penske. The distinguished billionaire entrepreneur was calm amid the chaotic postrace scene, every gleaming white hair in place, his Marlboro Team Penske shirt still crisply starched despite a long, hot afternoon in the pits.
