Undefeated, looking to stay that way, Hoosiers take on Ball State Sunday

The 2-0 IU women's soccer team hopes to keep its winning streak alive when the team takes on the Ball State University Cardinals at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bill Armstrong Stadium. As much as the Hoosiers want to be 3-0 when the weekend is over, getting another win is not the only mission. IU coach Mick Lyon said the team has two priorities. "This Sunday is basically two things: build on what we have and win the game," Lyon said.

Hoosiers prepare for Ball State, SW Mizzou

An in-state foe and an out-of-state opponent await the Hoosiers this weekend when the IU women's field hockey team faces off with Ball State Friday and Southwest Missouri State Sunday. IU goes into the game with a 1-1 record after dropping a 3-1 game to Berkeley and earning a close 2-1 victory against Stanford, with both games in California. On the other hand, the Cardinals come into the game with a 0-2 record, losing to both Northeastern 2-1, and William & Mary, 2-1. IU and BSU tied 3-3 in a preseason scrimmage Aug. 22.

Indiana Open provides home advantages

The IU women's cross country team kicks off its 2004 season tonight at the Indiana Open. The meet will be held at IU's home course at 6:45 p.m. Even though Hoosier coach Judy Wilson is treating this meet as a low-key tune-up, she said she still recognizes the importance the meet holds for her entire squad.

Knight's next episode: his own

His antics on and off the court draw people in from all over to see what he will do next. So CBS and Paramount television have decided to base a sitcom on the life of Bobby Knight. Now fans and critics alike will have the opportunity to see another side of Knight they may have never seen before. CBS and Paramount Television have struck a deal with Knight to create a television sitcom based on his life.

Hoosiers host tournament to open up regular season

The road to the Home Depot Center and a return trip to the NCAA College Cup begins tonight for the No. 1-ranked IU men's soccer team. Last season, the Hoosiers were victorious in the College Cup championship game, as they defeated St. John's University 2-1. The game against St. John's marked the last time former coach Jerry Yeagley paced the sidelines for the Hoosiers as he retired following the final whistle of the game.

Saturday will be a first for many things. It will be the first step for an IU football team looking to make a bowl game and improve on last season's 2-10 record. It will be the first chance for the offense and defense to show off their hard work in practice. A first victory, however, will not be a walk in the park. Hoosier to miss season

All-American, All-Big Ten, U.S. Under-21 participant, second all-time leading scorer, all-time assists leader and team co-captain Kayla Bashore will not be playing this year for the Hoosiers. The acclaimed field hockey star will be redshirting for the season as she prepares to take the MCAT test for entrance into medical school. "It feels like the right thing to do. This year has already taught me a lot," Bashore said of her season on the sidelines.

Sophomore leads by example

It was the Illinois high school championship soccer game, and Jed Zayner, a young back who accepted nothing but the best, knew victory was within his grasp. Hoosier garners Big Ten award

IU women's soccer senior Kim Grodek was recently named the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Week. The honor comes as no surprise to her teamates since the Hoosier midfielder scored five goals and tallied an assist in a single weekend of competition in which the Hoosiers brought home the Milwaukee Cup championship.

Prosecutors drop Kobe Bryant case; Civil action still pending against Lakers star

EAGLE, Colo. -- The criminal case against Kobe Bryant case collapsed Wednesday as prosecutors said they had no choice but to drop the sexual assault charge because the NBA star's accuser no longer wanted to participate. Bryant, whose trial had been days from opening arguments, responded with an apology to the woman who had accused him and whose civil suit for damages is still pending.

College football season returns for Labor Day weekend

IU welcomes back team depth after back-to-back NCAA berths

After posting back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances the past two seasons, their first since 1989 and 1990, Wilson and her team of runners are back and hoping to make the event for the third consecutive year.

Hoosiers primed to contend with Big Ten conference elite

Hoosiers finally hit gridiron with full roster of scholarships

Ten years ago. The Hoosiers had their last winning season 10 years ago at 6-5, but that is only the beginning. They attended their last bowl game 11 years ago, losing to Virginia Tech 45-20. IU has not won a bowl game since 1991, when they shutout Baylor 24-0. The Hoosiers have not won a Big Ten Championship since the Rose Bowl campaign of 1967.

Golfers swing into fall season

Twenty-three seasons, seven Big Ten Championships, 12 top-three finishes and eight Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. That is the legacy left behind by legendary women's golf coach Sam Carmichael after his retirement last season. Not only did the Hoosiers lose their long-time coach, but they also graduated four seniors, including Academic All-American Karen Dennison. But replacing a legend doesn't seem to phase new coach Clint Wallman.

Hoosiers prepare for tougher schedule

By its own admission, the IU men's golf team will be facing a much tougher fall schedule in 2004 than the fall schedule in 2003. But the Hoosiers don't seem too worried. Sept. 11 marks the beginning of the fall season when the Hoosiers tee off in the Michigan-Radrick Farms Intercollegiate Invitational. Other tournaments include the Central Regional Preview at Notre Dame and the Xavier Invitational, both of which will give the Hoosiers a look at some area rivals.

Young team sets high goals for season

Don't be surprised if IU women's soccer coach Mick Lyon is seen sporting a diaper bag this season. After all, with seven true freshmen, three redshirt freshmen and nine sophomores, Lyon isn't blessed with a wealth of experience. "We've got a lot of babies," Hoosier coach Mick Lyon said. "The spirit of youngsters, they're so excited to play, they're so excited to be here -- to be part of IU."
