Haas has his eyes on NCAA glory

When the IU men's cross country team climbs into the van for the short drive to NCAAs Championships in Terre Haute early this November, the health of the team's core will be an important factor. Even with its recent success on the national level, the team has not gotten to the NCAA's grand finale with everyone 100 percent healthy.

Before three weeks ago, Lucas Steijn's knowledge about IU was pretty limited. He knew that Kerry Rupp was an assistant coach. He knew 'Hoosiers' was about basketball in Indiana. He watched IU hoops on TV last year.

IU coach Mike Davis announced today he will have one more big body on the inside this season, and he doesn't hail from the U.S. Lucas Steijn, a 6-10, 230-pound center, is from Muiderberg, Netherlands. Steijn played last season after playing for Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg, Va. He helped Notre Dame win the Virginia Division II state title after averaging 12 points and eight rebounds per game.

Sophomore overcomes injury to pace team

Senior leading young Hoosier team on and off court

Every collegiate coach wants an upperclassman on her team whose etiquette and demeanor on the court rub off onto younger players getting accustomed to the college game. Very few coaches get a player whose actions in the community combine with this knowledge of the sport to set an example for how to make the most out of college life. IU women's volleyball coach Katie Weismiller has exactly that player in senior middle blocker Katie Pollom.

IU routs Central Michigan 41-10

In its first home game of a two-game weekend between Ball State and Southwest Missouri State, the IU field hockey team dominated the Cardinals 3-0. All three IU goals were scored in the second half, one each by junior Nikki Orciuch, sophomore Lydia Schrott, and freshman Frederique Meeuwen respectively.

Couch, Gildon, Levens among NFL players released

Tim Couch's stay in Green Bay was short and unproductive. The top overall draft choice in the 1999 draft by Cleveland, Couch was released by the Browns in June. He joined the Packers and was projected as Brett Favre's backup. But the quarterback never progressed, and the Packers cut him Sunday as teams got down to the 53-man roster limit for the regular season.

IU makes solid season debut against Texas

The IU men's cross country team opened its season with a relaxed 5,000-meter race against Texas on a muggy Friday evening at the IU varsity cross country course. The two teams spent the race in a tight pack, with 14 runners finishing within three seconds of each other. The meet was unscored to allow unattached runners to compete.

Ball State knocks off IU for 1st loss

Two undefeated teams took Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium Sunday, but only one left that way. In their first ever meeting, the Ball State Cardinals moved to 4-0 when they beat IU 1-0 in the women's soccer team's home opener.

Team uses meet to gain experience

The IU women's cross country team kicked off its season with the Indiana Open Friday night. The home meet was not scored and the only women runners present for the meet were the Hoosiers. Still, the lack of competition gave the Hoosiers a good chance to gain experience. Redshirt sophomore Jessica Gall, who sat out last season due to a quadricep injury, was the first woman to cross the finish line.

Hamilton moves into No. 2 job after Sauter released INDIANAPOLIS -- Joe Hamilton's legs are healthy and apparently so is his right arm. After missing two NFL seasons because of a knee injury, Hamilton is returning to the NFL as Peyton Manning's top backup.

IU takes second in weekend tourney to St. Louis

Coming off Wednesday's win against IU-Purdue University Indianapolis and with history on its side, the IU women's volleyball team went into this weekend's IU Credit Union Invitational with high hopes. The Hoosiers had won the past three Invitationals, going a perfect 9-0 in the four years the team has hosted the tournament.

The Hoosiers picked up right where they left off this weekend by capturing two victories in dramatic fashion while getting new coach Mike Freitag off to a perfect start at the reigns of the defending champions. On Friday, IU received quite a scare from Boston University, who put themselves ahead 2-1 with two quick goals at the start of the second half.

Freshman begins career with success

Freshman cornerback Tracy Porter couldn't have written a better opening chapter to his career as a Hoosier. Most of IU's true freshmen didn't even see the playing field Saturday, but Porter lit it up.

Texans defeat Tampa Bay in preseason

HOUSTON -- Michael Pittman, who got extensive playing time because the Bucs rested starter Charlie Garner, ran for 71 yards on 12 carries and Tampa Bay held Houston to three field goals. Several starters on both sides were on the sidelines by the end of the scoreless first quarter, leaving reserves jockeying for jobs to play the rest of the night.

Team remains perfect in season openers

IU women's volleyball coach Katie Weismiller has guided her Hoosier team into 12 season opening matches and has 12 season opening victories to show for it. The latest team to fall victim to Weismiller's streak was IU-Purdue University Indianapolis, who the Hoosiers defeated Wednesday evening. The Hoosiers knocked off the Jaguars 30-23, 28-30, 30-25, 30-20 in an IU athletic team's first-ever appearance on the IUPUI campus.
