McDoel Gardens divided on issue

·

James R. Davis has lived in the McDoel Gardens neighborhood for much of his life. His parents built a house there decades ago, and he now owns a his own home there. He's paid his taxes and filed all the paperwork with the city whenever he's wanted to make exterior renovations, and he's worried that the property will soon be subject to another level of bureaucracy.

Local Libertarian speaks on issues

·

Paul Hager said he wants to make it clear that he isn't evil. "What's evil about getting your message out?" asked the 50-year old software engineer and Bloomington Libertarian. "Politics has two functions: one, as a vehicle for spreading your message, and two, getting yourself elected." The two are related, said Hager, who has run twice for Congress and once for Senate on the Libertarian ticket, against Ind. Sen. Richard Lugar and U.S. Rep. John Hostettler.

Wee Willie's a homestyle treat

Imagine the homestyle diners in many movies and in many small towns, where the waitresses know the customers by name and patrons greet each other from across the room. Now imagine that such a place exists in Bloomington. In fact, it does. Wee Willie's, at 1724 S. Walnut St., serves homestyle meals in a friendly, neighborly atmosphere. Our server was prompt and friendly, and our food was prepared in minutes. And Wee Willie's offers inexpensive meals with generous portions.

Be afraid of Bush's education reform plan

·

I don't know about you, but I am scared. I'm not scared by supernatural phenomenon such as ghosts and goblins, by the apocalypse or even by those oddly entrancing Old Navy commercials. I'm scared of a more sinister, dangerous and immediate threat: our newly elected president, George W. Bush. And, with the unveiling of his education reform plan last week, my fears are justified.

Family stories deepen experience at Holocaust museum

·

We all grow up hearing certain stories again and again. One of mine comes when the old brown picture album comes out, and my mom notices my sister or me staring intently at the pictures of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The pictures show a frenzy of people, an air of ceremony and a smattering of swastikas.

Another, but no less important, is to raise children to carry on the family legacy and to make the world a better place. This dream of children now has two couples engaged in a legal battle that will probably scar all parties involved.

Women swimmers suffer loss to Lions

·

In swimming, first place finishes do not ensure victory. Depth is a very important element of a team's success. The swimmers who finish second through sixth score valuable points that usually dictate the victor at the end of the meet. Penn State displayed such depth this weekend beating IU 207-163. The Hoosiers did beat Michigan State in the three-way meet, 251-118.
