INDIANAPOLIS -- During IU's two games in the Big Ten Tournament March 11 and 12, two new heroes emerged for IU. Former walk-ons turned offensive sparks junior guards Ryan Tapak and Mark Johnson led the Hoosiers. Coming off the bench, Tapak had six points and 11 assists while Johnson chipped in with a career-high 13 points in a first round win over Ohio State.

Hamas leader killed in Israeli air strike

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Israeli helicopters fired missiles at Hamas leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin as he left a mosque near his house at daybreak Monday, residents said, and witnesses said he was killed.

Hoosiers finish 12th at NCAA's

IU Women's Swimming and Diving has finished in the top 16 at the NCAA National Championships the past four years, and this year's competition held to that tradition as the Hoosiers finished 12th at the meet in College Station, Texas.

Hoosiers capture Shootout title

The IU women's golf team headed to Boerne, Texas, during spring break to compete in the Tapatio Springs Shootout, hosted by Baylor University. The 19-team field included four teams in the Golfweek Top 50, including the No. 46 Hoosiers.

Baseball's spring break ends over .500 The IU baseball team went 4-2 on its spring break trip to improve its record to 11-7 on the season. During this six-game road stretch in Bradenton, Fla. the Hoosiers recorded victories over Duquesne, Columbia, Vermont and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Indiana, Ball State to begin 3-game series MUNCIE -- IU and Ball State have agreed in principle to a three-game series that will bring the Hoosiers to Muncie for only the fourth time since the schools first played in the 1934-35 season.

Tradition long gone

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana high school basketball traded tradition for trophies in 1998 when it scrapped the tournament format that produced the most famous shot in Hoosier hoops history. Now, 50 years after Bobby Plump's last-second basket lifted tiny Milan over big-school Muncie Central, the tournament is split into four separate classes. There's almost no chance the state ever will go back to the open-class tourney.

Many highs, many lows

But IU's two senior players, center George Leach and forward A.J. Moye, will look back and see defeat in a game that squashed their tournament dreams. Illinois 71. Indiana 59. Even a comeback after a 13-point deficit couldn't help the Hoosiers. 'There's always next year,' people will say.

Incidents reported at dorm

Junior Fred Williams was assaulted and robbed at the Eigenmann food store by a group of male students he knew March 11, according to the IU Police Department. IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger said two of the males asked Williams about money he owed their friend and then assaulted him.

Leadership course offered to faith-based organizations

IU to assess state agency

Marion County defender faces financial troubles

INDIANAPOLIS -- Marion County's chief public defender said his office lacks money to assign lawyers to defend parents faced with losing custody of their children. But judges have ordered Chief Public Defender David Cook to provide representation, setting up a showdown in the county's financially-strapped court system.

Abuse presentation to kids results in arrests

BLUFFTON, Ind. -- A presentation on child sexual abuse prompted reports of about 30 such crimes and has led to the arrest of an Ossian man charged with molesting an 11-year-old. Jason M. Mall, 27, remained in the Wells County Jail on Saturday in lieu of $50,000 bail. He was arrested Tuesday on a charge of child molestation by deviate sexual conduct, a felony punishable by 20 to 50 years in prison.

Supreme Court to rule on Pledge of Allegiance in schools
