Around The Game

Baseball's spring break ends over .500\nThe IU baseball team went 4-2 on its spring break trip to improve its record to 11-7 on the season. \nDuring this six-game road stretch in Bradenton, Fla. the Hoosiers recorded victories over Duquesne, Columbia, Vermont and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \nThe finale with Wisconsin-Milwaukee went down to the wire. Senior Seth Bynum hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to give the Hoosiers an 11-10 win. Senior Nick Vitielliss started the game, going five innings and giving up four runs. \nSenior Adam Pegg came in for relief, pitching the remaining four innings, and picking up the win to improve his record to 2-2 on the season. \nThe losses for IU came at the hand of Rhode Island in the trip opener, 7-6, and in the third game the Hoosiers fell to Bucknell, 4-2. \nIU plays Tuesday against Indiana Wesleyan at home. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Sembower Field.

Softball successful over spring break \nWhile the majority of students were away enjoying the sun in exotic locales, the IU softball team remained in Bloomington and was winning games. \nThe Hoosiers (13-13) hosted the IU Classic as it dominated the competition through the weekend, going undefeated and boosting their record to the .500 mark for the third time this season. \nIn the first game, IU defeated Wright State (9-7) 5-4 then dismantled Western Michigan (9-10), beating them 8-0. The Hoosiers continued their dominance Sunday by shutting out Loyola-Chicago (7-10) 7-0 and then claimed the IU Classic title by defeating Western Michigan for a second time by the score of 4-1. \nThe Hoosiers continued their success when they traveled to San Diego last weekend to take part in the Aztec Classic. In the first game, IU defeated Buffalo (6-9) with help from RBIs by sophomore Lauren Hines and senior Heather Stillians. Sophomore Megan Roark got her second win of the season against Buffalo, pitching a complete game and striking out seven. \nIU ended its losing skid in its second game Saturday, beating UC-Riverside (7-22) 5-1. It continued its success against Southern Utah (13-8) winning by a score of 8-0. Sophomore Mariangee Bogado dominated on the mound, pitching four innings against Southern Utah and striking out eight batters. Each Hoosier had a hit in the game except for Bogado who reached base when she was hit by a pitch. The Hoosiers again took advantage of the eight-run rule when they went ahead 8-0 in the fifth inning. \nIU will play host to Drake for a double-header at 2 and 4 p.m. Tuesday.

IU rolls over Dons, falls to Bulls\nAfter a disappointing loss to No. 18 Kentucky on the road, 7-0, the Hoosiers were looking to rebound against the University of San Francisco Thursday and No. 38 South Florida March 19 in Tampa, Fla.\nThings started well for No. 64 IU as they were able to sweep past the Dons, 7-0. \nThe Hoosiers were paced by junior Jakub Praibis (10-3) who won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. IU was able to win out the rest of the singles, in which only one match went to a third set, as sophomore John Stone prevailed, 6-7, 7-5, and 10-4. \nIU was again presented with the opportunity to knock off a ranked opponent this season in South Florida, but couldn't come away with the victory as it fell 4-3 to the Bulls. \nThe doubles point played a pivotal role in the match, as South Florida and IU split the singles matches. \nThe Bulls were able to pick up the point though, which allowed them to prevail in the end, knocking the Hoosier's record back under .500.\nIU will resume Big Ten play against Wisconsin Saturday at noon, as the Hoosiers will look to even up their conference and overall records.

Men's golf takes fourth in Arizona\nThe IU men's golf team continued its spring schedule with a fourth place finish at the Steve Kerr Invitational in Phoenix, Saturday. The Hoosiers entered the tournament hoping to build on the momentum of a second-place finish at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic March 5-7. But the Hoosiers were unable to make a final-round charge against tournament champion No. 24 Colorado State, second place Texas-El Paso, and third place Xavier. IU finished Saturday eight strokes behind CSU.\nIU found itself in third place after two rounds of play, but the Hoosiers could not keep pace with the rest of the field.\nLeading the way for the Hoosiers was junior Heath Peters. Peters put together a consistent tournament, firing rounds of 72, 71 and 71. His total of 214 was good enough for third place -- nine strokes behind tournament champion Denver junior Barrett Jarosch.\nOther notable Hoosier finishes include junior Jeff Overton, who finished tied for No. 14, and sophomore Brad Marek who recovered from an opening round 78 to tie for No. 16.\nAlthough hoping for a win, IU coach Mike Mayer cited the performances of Peters and Marek as reasons for optimism.\nThe Hoosiers will hope to break out with their first win of the spring when they next compete April 10-11 at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette.

Diving prepares for NCAA tourney \nIU junior diver Ryan Fagan, the only diver for this year's squad, qualified for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships by way of his performance at last weekend's NCAA Zone 'C' Diving Championships held in Bloomington. Fagan will compete in the championships in the one-meter, three-meter and platform events after finishing eighth, third and fifth, respectively, with scores of 539.90, 518.60 and 418.60, respectively. This performance comes two weeks after the Big Ten Championships in which Fagan's weekend was highlighted with a fourth-place finish in the platform event. IU diving coach Jeff Huber, said the championships will cap off a solid season for Ryan, noting the best for him is yet to come.\n"Since we red-shirted some kids this season, he has been diving on his own and doing a terrific job," Huber said. "He has a real sparkle to his diving right now, and if he is ready to let it shine, he will surprise some people."\nThe men will compete in the NCAA championships next weekend at Hofstra University in East Meadow, New York.

Sean Jefferson wins NCAA Mile \nIU sent five men's track athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. last weekend, and came away with two NCAA All-Americans, one of whom was IU's first men's NCAA Champion since 1993. \nSophomore All-American Sean Jefferson used a strong 600-meter kick to claim a decisive victory over a field including three sub-four minute milers and last year's reigning NCAA mile champion. Jefferson ran into the lead with just over three laps remaining and was never seriously challenged, winning easily with a final-stretch celebration in 4:00.16. BYU's Nathan Robison was next to cross the finish line in 4:01.99. The mark was Jefferson's personal best.\nFreshman speedster David Neville also garnered NCAA All-American awards by finishing seventh in a star-studded 200-meter field. Neville improved on his indoor personal best by posting a time of 20.92 in both the trials and finals. The top-eight finishers in each event earn NCAA All-American status. \nIU also sent a distance medley relay team to the NCAA Championships. The squad of senior Rodney Hollis, junior Russell Hollis, junior Eric Redman and Neville, finished 13th with a time of 9:56 -- far off the school record 9:31 IU ran to qualify for the meet.
