Courthouse will stay, judges say

TERRE HAUTE -- Judges cannot afford to move into a new federal courthouse planned for downtown Terre Haute, one of the judges said. Budget constraints have forced the U.S. District Court to lay off two employees, said Chief Judge Larry J. McKinney.

Leaders say arts aren't dumbed down

PITTSBURGH -- Pearl Jam and The Boss at the ballet? Jerry Springer and Palm Pilots at the opera? Participants at the National Performing Arts Convention, the first of its kind, acknowledge that the high arts are changing, but they say barbs from some traditionalists that works are being dumbed down simply don't ring true.

Political songs of Jones enjoyed by audience

Grammy award-winner Rickie Lee Jones' soulful crooning enchanted audience members Thursday night with her politically-driven tunes, playing to more than 500 fans at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. Jones, best-known for her 1979 hit "Chuck E's in Love," and her four band members played music with varying instrumental emphasis that gave audience members a glimpse into the wide range of heartfelt emotions and playfulness she was able to effortlessly convey.

The many legends of the "Southern woman" fill the annals of most every medium -- from the girls of the WhistleStop Café in "Fried Green Tomatoes" to dark, tragic figures of Tennessee Williams' Blanche DuBois and William Faulkner's Miss Emily, from the vivacious women of "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" to the incarnation of the Southern woman herself, Miss Scarlett O'Hara.

Entertaining 'Button' questions responsibility

In Jon Brooks' intelligently written "The Button," now showing on the Bloomington Playwright's Project Timothy J. Wiles stage, the provocative power of a little red button becomes an item of mystery and intrigue in the final mainstage BPP play of the season. The play is very entertaining, but at times Brooks' exuberance to captivate the audience overshadows the play's inherent message, which could have been shown stronger.

Lower gas prices return to Indiana

Even though gas prices have decreased over the last week from a high of approximately $2.10 per gallon to an average of $1.82, Bloomington area residents say the decrease in gas prices will not affect their driving habits. Shellie Goetz, an IU alumna, said she commutes four hours a day to her job and she is happy the prices are down. "Instead of spending $20 to fill my tank, I am spending about $15," Goetz said.

Search committee distributes advertisement for new athletic director

The committee for the new IU athletic director isn't wasting any time in getting the word out. IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley released an advertisement specifying all qualifications and has called for submissions of nominations or applications. A deadline has been set for July 16, with the position being chosen in August. Included in the advertisement is a Web site address applicants can refer for more information on the athletic department and qualifications for the position. The address for the Web site is www.indiana.edu/~adsearch. Amongst the qualifications listed in the advertisement include a genuine commitment to academic and intercollegiate athletic excellence, and experience in fiscal planning and budget management.
