An inmate at Monroe County Correctional Center died Friday morning, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police.

Antonio Davis, 48, was found unresponsive in bed at 12:40 a.m., according to the press release. Correctional center staff assessed him and began life-saving measures, which were continued by EMS but were unsuccessful.

“Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Marte was advised of Davis’s death, and to ensure agency transparency, the sheriff directed that detectives crime scene investigators from the Indiana State Police be contacted to conduct a full investigation,” the press release states.

An autopsy is pending and the death remains under investigation, according to the press release.

Davis was charged Oct. 14 last year with two counts of dealing methamphetamine and two counts of dealing cocaine. On Oct. 29 he was also charged with possession of cocaine and possession of a narcotic drug, according to court records.

On March 9, Monroe Circuit Judge Darcie Fawcett denied Davis release from jail for drug treatment. He was jailed at a $30,000 surety and $500 cash bond.

Davis’ pretrial hearing was scheduled for April 7.
