Students saving money on textbooks

As students begin to fill the streets of Bloomington, most might find their pockets quickly becoming empty. The thief is the rising cost of textbooks and course packets. Trying to stretch their dollars, many students are beginning to find alternative places to buy their books instead of simply using the better-known T.I.S. and IU Bookstore.

IU ranks lowest in Big Ten

At No. 71, IU and Michigan State University tied for the lowest academic ranking in the Big Ten, according to US News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2005," where they ranked 248 schools. "The news is not as bad as it sounds," said IU-Bloomington Interim Chancellor Ken Gros Louis. "And my office is preparing a detailed analysis of the various criteria, with points assigned to each one, and how we fared with the other Big Ten schools in all categories."

Hoosiers kick off season this weekend

After a strong preseason performance, the IU women's soccer team is ready to carry its momentum to where the points count and the wins matter. The Hoosiers beat Kentucky 2-1 at the IU-Purdue University Fort Wayne Soccer Showcase and then disposed of Western Kentucky 2-0 Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Libertarians hope national, state campaigns will spotlight party ideas

As the race for the Statehouse heats up, one candidate is more concerned with raising issues than winning his election. Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Ken Gividen plans to make an impact on the polls with his party's strategy to cut down the state's bureaucracy. Gividen said although he may not win the race, he hopes this election will add prominence to the party.

Crawford leads U.S. sweep of 200

NCAA denies Williams' reinstatement request

LOS ANGELES -- All-American Mike Williams was denied his request to play for the University of Southern California by the NCAA Thursday, leaving the star receiver unable to rejoin the top-ranked Trojans after being shut out of the NFL draft by the courts.

ATHENS, Greece -- An hour after the game, Mia Hamm was still on the field, hugging, crying and posing for pictures with an Olympic gold medal around her neck. Then, finally, she left. After 17 years, 153 goals and 266 games -- including a grueling overtime finale -- it was time for her to go. "There are few times in your life where you get to write the final chapter the way you want to," Hamm said. "I think a lot of us did that tonight."

The accolades continue to roll in for the IU men's soccer team, as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America ranked the Hoosiers No. 1 in its annual preseason top 25 poll. Earlier in the summer, College Soccer News named IU No. 1 in its preseason poll, as well.

Employee charged in felony drug case still working at IU

John "Jack" Kenealy, an IU night operations supervisor who was arrested last month by the Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Abuse Task Force, is currently awaiting trial on three felony drug counts. He was arrested in his Bloomington home July 29 after officers discovered methcathinone in his residence.

Free city, campus busing all week Through Sept. 5, all public transit services in Bloomington, including the Bloomington Transit, BT Access, IU Campus Bus and Rural Transit, are free to all students and community members. Bloomington Transit will also start several new routes in the downtown area. Major stops will include the Indiana Memorial Union, Kelley School of Business and the IU Library.

Officials dedicated to University

Move-in day, the induction ceremony and roommate meet-and-greets, are just some of the many things freshmen face. They will read and hear countless names of administrators, faculty and staff without having a clue who those people are or what they have to do with the University. For that matter, students who have been at IU for years may not know these key individuals, such as the board of trustees, one of the most important branches of the University government.

Officials, rebels accept peace offer

NAJAF, Iraq -- Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, made a dramatic return to Najaf Thursday and swiftly won agreement from a rebel cleric and the government to end three weeks of fighting between his militia and U.S.-Iraqi forces. The renegade Muqtada al-Sadr accepted the proposal in a face-to-face meeting Thursday night with the 75-year-old al-Sistani, Iraq's most influential Shiite cleric. Hours afterward, the government also agreed to the deal.

Release of Siegfried & Roy tiger attack video debated

LAS VEGAS -- The company that produced the Siegfried & Roy magic show said Wednesday that it won't give federal investigators a video of the tiger attack on illusionist Roy Horn because it's protecting the performer's privacy. Feld Entertainment Inc. said it's offered on several occasions to show footage of the October attack to the U.S. Department of Agriculture but the agency has not accepted the invitation.

Illinois sues Dave Matthews Band

CHICAGO -- Illinois' attorney general sued Dave Matthews Band Tuesday for allegedly dumping up to 800 pounds of foul-smelling waste from a tour bus into the Chicago River, dousing a tour boat filled with passengers. The lawsuit accuses the band and one of its tour bus drivers, Stefan Wohl, of violating state water pollution and public nuisance laws. It seeks $70,000 in civil penalties.

Tactual museum offers exhibits for the blind

Dovas might be breaking the cardinal rule of museums, where visitors can look at but not touch the prized exhibits guarded behind ropes or in glass cases. But in an unassuming building on a quiet side street in central Athens, something is different.
