New seat belt regulations to go into effect July 1

Beginning July 1, Indiana law will require all motor vehicle passengers, including those riding in backseats, to wear seat belts at all times. Currently, only front seat passengers and passengers under the age of 16 are required to wear seat belts.

Jazz fest honors Hoagy

Indianapolis – The ninth annual Indianapolis Jazz Festival that took place June 15-17 drew nearly 30,000 attendees and several big-name artists.The first day of the festival, “Women in jazz” day, was kicked off by IU’s own Monika Herzig, a school of music professor and renowned pianist. She and her band started the festival with some traditional jazz standards as well as original compositions.

IU catcher Jon Fixler signs with Astros

Only a handful of IU baseball players have had success at the major league level. Now another former Hoosier, catcher Jon Fixler, is looking to be the next. The junior from Riverwoods, Ill., will forgo his senior season and play for the Houston Astros Single A affiliate Tri-City Valleycats after being selected in the draft’s 19th round.

LOS ANGELES – The same food safety net that couldn’t catch poisoned pet-food ingredients from China has a much bigger hole. Billions of dollars’ worth of foreign ingredients that Americans eat in everything from salad dressing to ice cream get a pass from overwhelmed inspectors, despite a rising tide of imports from countries with spotty records, according to an Associated Press analysis of federal trade and food data.

Smokers can walk to lessen cravings

Are you struggling to quit smoking? Take a walk. Scientists at the University of Exeter’s School of Sport and Health Sciences in the United Kingdom report that even five minutes of exercise can reduce cravings and smoking withdrawal symptoms such as poor concentration, stress and anxiety.

Bears Place hosts Comedy Caravan

Laughter is the best medicine and Bear’s Place is hard at work prescribing the funnies. Bear’s Place has been on the Comedy Caravan circuit 21 years. Comedians on the circuit perform in nightclubs and bars all across the country. Comedians Russ Nagel and Mel Fine performed on June 11.

Hoeppner will not return in 2007

The IU Athletics Department announced Friday that IU head football coach Terry Hoeppner will not return to the Hoosiers for the 2007 season nearly three months after he took a leave of absence for medical reasons.
