Upward Bound participants upset about halt of project

·

For Eric Barnes, the Upward Bound Project was more than just a program to get away from his hometown of East Chicago – it was a family tradition and his gateway to finding his life goals and meeting new friends.

Minimum wage set to increase today

·

The federal minimum wage is rising again Thursday, going from $5.85 an hour to $6.55. The increase is part of a two-year plan enacted in July 2007 after Congress passed the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007. Before this act was passed, minimum wage hadn’t been increased for about a decade, said Katie Moreau, press secretary for Congressman Baron Hill, D-9th. Hill voted in favor of the act.

As fair grows, traditions endure

·

Time changes a lot of things, but the land off of Airport Road near Karst Farm Park has been home to the Monroe County Fair for more than half a century.

The teen screen

·

“American Teen,” a new Sundance prize winning documentary, following the lives of several high-schoolers, hits theaters tomorrow. The movie was filmed in Warsaw, Indiana, and while you may know people from the town, hell you may even know people in the movie, don’t look for any opinions or local insights about the area from this columnist.

Looting pleasure

·

The performances are what you’d expect from a caper ensemble cast; some solid, some lackluster, and the writing is tight enough to keep you from losing interest.

Meeting Dave makes a bad impression

·

The whole movie is just one brainless gag after the other, producing more eye rolls than laughs.  In other words, the audience is left feeling bored rather than amused and because of this the movie feels a lot longer than its hour and a half running time.

Explicit is right

·

If you are at all squeemish when it comes to race I wouldn’t buy this album. But if you can handle it, I suggest you buy Untitled and get ready for a black history lesson.

Magically delicious

·

Postcards to my Sewing Circle might not be as cool as Woodruff’s mustache, but their EP shows The Delicious has the potential to be just as memorable.

Obama visits Holocaust memorial

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama donned a Jewish skullcap at Israel’s Holocaust memorial on Wednesday and vowed to preserve America’s close ties with Israel in a dramatic visit to the Holy Land in which he also promised the Palestinians to push vigorously to win them a state.

Nothing to be guilty about

·

Despite the less-than-enthusiastic message of much of the album, the musical quality and diversity of the tracks is enough to make Modern Guilt a very interesting and enjoyable piece of music, and another great addition to Beck’s already impressive discography.

Beijing to set up zones for Olympic protests

Beijing will set up specially designated zones for protesters during next month’s Olympics, a security official said Wednesday, in a sign China’s authoritarian government may allow some demonstrations during the games.

Mamma Mia

Mamma Meryl!

·

While definitely not a masterpiece, “Mamma Mia!” doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s completely ridiculous and contrived, but it’s great for audiences who just want to have fun.

Rice pushes top North Korean diplomat on nukes

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pushed North Korea on Wednesday to accept terms to verify the dismantling of its nuclear-weapons program, as the two countries held cabinet-level talks for the first time in four years.

Darkness prevails

·

Although the film’s special effects are top notch, we never see them overshadow the human conflict like most superhero capers. This conflict is a question of how long humanity can remain decent, and it serves as the backbone of the film. It drives the plot, complicates the characters and transforms just another superhero film into an epic crime masterpiece.

Wanted: a team

·

Let the obituary read: “Today died Zachary Osterman, faithful and at times solitary member of the Atlanta Hawks bandwagon since the stylings of Mookie Blaylock graced the Omni’s parquet floor.”
