Legalized cannabis yields further benefits

Another beneficial component of re-legalizing cannabis (marijuana) that doesn’t get mentioned (Editorial: “Legalizing Marijuana,” March 9) is that it will lower hard drug addiction rates. Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE, will have to stop brainwashing youth into believing lies, half-truths and propaganda concerning cannabis, which creates grave future problems.

Forty-four percent of us are from somewhere other than Indiana. Nearly 8 percent of us are minorities. Four thousand of us have travelled from another country to study here at IU.

Largest student festival, MovieFest, starts Thursday; films shown April 9

The world’s largest student festival, MovieFest, is coming to IU thanks to a student collaboration with a host of campus organizations and local sponsors. The festival provides students with cameras and laptops for free so they can create their own 5-minute films within a week, said senior Jack Shannon.

Hillel Center seeking the next ‘Campus Super Star’

The Helene G. Simon Hillel Center is looking for the most talented vocalist on campus. The center is sponsoring “Campus Super Star” competition at 7 p.m. today in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, according to a press release from the IU Hillel Center. Thirty-one contestants will compete for the grand prize of $5,000.

Mother Bear’s collaborates with Giving Back to Africa

Mother Bear’s Pizza will be indirectly supporting people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo today. Mother Bear’s will donate $2 to Giving Back to Africa for every large pizza a customer orders with a coupon through dine-in or delivery. The deal takes place from 5 p.m. to midnight today. Customers can obtain the coupon either through the Students Taking Active Roles Today Facebook group, by printing off the flyer from givingbacktoafrica.org or by flyer handouts.

Law school encourages students to volunteer

The Maurer School of Law will be joining other law schools around the nation by establishing their Public Service Program, voluntary pro bono work to be completed by the students. Starting this fall, students will be encouraged to complete 60 hours of pro bono work while they are in the law school, according to an IU press release.
