Trash-talking corner backs his words

Line up across from Leonard Bryant on a Saturday game day and you'd better be prepared to get an earful. For the sophomore cornerback, trash-talking is as natural a part of football as tackling. "I always come up to 'em," Bryant said, "and first thing I say is 'Hey man, why aren't you looking at me. You scared? What are you, tired? You tired? I'm telling you, I'm going to make a play. It's going to be on ESPN -- Dee da dee, dee da dee (ESPN theme).' I'm from Florida. I'm from the same area as Deion (Sanders), Jevon (Kearse) and Edgerrin (James). That's just how we do it down South."

Famed conductor to come to IU

Sergiu Comissiona, a world-renowned conductor, will lead an IU School of Music orchestra at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Musical Arts Center. Thomas Wieligman, coordinator of instrumental ensembles at the Music School, said that very few schools in the country can call on someone like Comissiona, who has worked with some of the best orchestras in numerous countries.

Creative writing students share poetry, fiction works

Going to a fiction and poetry reading can help students escape the reality of the daily grind, and IU's creative writing program offers exactly that. The program fills the need with its year-long series of readings by visiting lecturers and students in the Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. Tonight marks the first of the readings.

Black film showcase to kick off Saturday

Two years of working and planning will finally pay off for the Black Film Center and Archive with the launch of two months of programs exploring the history of African Americans in cinema. "We are very excited," said Audrey McCluskey, director of the Black Film Center and Archive. "The exhibit hopes to explore the history of people of African descent in cinematic form."

$20,000 violin missing in School of Music thefts

An IU student's $20,000 violin is missing, along with nearly $2,000 of recording equipment and cash taken out of a dean's desk. The School of Music sent an e-mail warning students about the security risk Monday, a little over a month after master keys from the School were reported missing.

Kernan to name lieutenant governor

Gov. Joe Kernan plans to announce his choice for lieutenant governor at 2 p.m. today at the Indiana Statehouse. Kernan's selection might be the clearest indication yet of whether he intends to toss his hat into the ring for the 2004 governor's race.

A new way to catch fake IDs

Indiana's liquor stores are tackling the problem of fake IDs by testing new technology at three college towns, including Bloomington. The Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers has initiated a one-of-a-kind trial where it will test the system, which scans the bar code on driver's licenses and lets workers know if the ID is legitimate.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Fighting erupted Wednesday between rival warlords who both claim allegiance to the government of President Hamid Karzai, and an official of one of the warring groups said as many as 60 people were killed and scores more wounded.
