Swing dance soiree teaches lindy hop

The number one rule of swing dancing, and for some the most difficult, is following your partner. The Bloomington Swing Dance Committee provided an opportunity Saturday night for students to learn all about a form of swing dancing called the lindy hop as part of a series of dance workshops. The classes take place the first Saturday of every month at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut Street.

Student dies after street race

An IU junior was killed early Friday after a 120-mph drag race between students led to two separate wrecks. Jeffrey Maiatico, 20, was killed east of Bloomington when his roommate, junior Daipayan Banerjee, who was driving the vehicle, lost control of his 1997 Ford Mustang.

Former mayor dies of cancer

Former Bloomington Mayor and U.S. Congressman Frank McCloskey always wanted to make sure his voice was heard. During a 12-day hospital stay that ended last week, McCloskey asked his friend Regina Moore, who was at his hospital bedside, to get an absentee ballot so he could vote in this year's election.

The Christmas season began a little early at Binford Elementary School, 315 North Drive, Saturday morning. Cheerful gingerbread-man signs led the way as the scent of pies, cookies and spices filled the air. People cheerfully shopped for seasonal decorations and the gifts from local crafters at the eighth annual Tri-Kappa Annual Arts and Crafts show.

Solar storm of disapproval

Last week, two major magnetic solar storms hit earth. The first blast was among the strongest in the last 11 years, followed up by another massive storm Thursday. According to one astronomer, the likelihood of two huge flares directed toward Earth coming so close together was "unprecedented" (Reuters, Oct. 30).

Church names first gay bishop

DURHAM, N.H. -- The Episcopal Church became the first major Christian denomination to make an openly gay man a bishop, consecrating V. Gene Robinson on Sunday as bishop of New Hampshire. The act almost certainly means disgruntled conservatives will break from the church.

In 1979, my aunt was driving her 1968 Cadillac Coup DeVille down a road in central New Jersey when she collided with a Datsun pickup truck. The truck sent her head-on into a set of four concrete pillars that were guarding a building. To this day, many of my family members say, "Thank God she was in that car."

Students prepare for weekend's Dance Marathon

When "Eye of the Tiger" begins to play over the loudspeaker each year and all the dancers come running out on the floor, Stacie England's heart stops, but all of her nerves are calm. England, IU Dance Marathon president, along with all the other participants in this weekend's 36-hour "marathon," have put in countless hours to ensure a successful event.

Chancellor leaves many initiatives on table

Sharon Brehm's days as chancellor are coming to an end, but the IU community will likely feel her presence for years to come. Brehm began many initiatives in her two-and-a-half year tenure as IU-B chancellor, addressing diversity concerns on campus after the Benton Mural controversy and leading a fiscal program for the University. Dean of Students Richard McKaig said Brehm's influence will not fade any time soon.

NEW YORK -- Marla Runyan has had her share of ups and downs this year. She barely finished the Boston Marathon in April. In the U.S. nationals, she won the 5,000 meters but ran slower than she wanted.

Hoosiers head to Iowa to face top 10 teams

The IU women's field hockey team heads to Iowa City, Iowa, this weekend to face off against No. 9 Iowa and No. 1 Wake Forest. The Hoosiers (7-8, 0-5 Big Ten) will look for their first conference win of the season in their last Big Ten game against the Hawkeyes.
