Bush shoots for moon by 2015

WASHINGTON -- President Bush beckoned the nation "forward into the universe" Wednesday, outlining a costly new effort to return Americans to the moon as early as 2015 and use it as a waystation to Mars and beyond. Bush said he envisioned "a new foothold on the moon ... and new journeys to the world beyond our own," underscoring a renewed commitment to manned spaceflight less than a year after the loss of the space shuttle Columbia and a crew of seven.

Ex-Enron chief pleads guilty

HOUSTON -- Andrew Fastow, the chief architect of the shady, off-the-books deals that brought down Enron, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of conspiracy in a deal that could take prosecutors to the top of the corporate ladder at the scandal-ridden company. The plea by the former Enron finance chief called for a 10-year sentence and for him to help prosecutors who have targeted -- but not charged the executives who once occupied the most opulent offices on the company's top floor: former Chairman, Kenneth Lay, and former CEO, Jeffrey Skilling.

Grants awarded to local organizations

While some will use next Monday's day off for leisure, local volunteers in the Bloomington community will be donating their time for a good cause. The city of Bloomington has been awarded a $7,500 grant distributed among 35 local organizations for the "A Day On! Not a Day Off!" volunteer services for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday Monday.

Museum showcases Boucher drawings

FORT WORTH, Texas - He drew with expression and detail, using soft red chalk to portray a nude woman reclining and pen and ink to bring to life religious and mythological scenes. Francois Boucher, the 18th-century draftsman who became the premiere painter for France's King Louis XV, drew some 10,000 pictures during his career. Many were sketched for his students in preparation for a painting or to refine his work.

Author weaves tale of passionate romance

In old Latin American proverb states in order to discover her power over men, a woman must learn to be a lady in the living room, a chef in the kitchen and a courtesan in the bedroom. Marisol, a native Venezuelan, bases her sensual novel "The Lady, the Chef, and the Courtesan" on this theme. By telling both the story of Pilar Castillo, a modern career woman originally from South America, and Gabriela Grenales, her grandmother, Marisol beautifully weaves -- and ultimately, connects -- the stories, thereby connecting Pilar's modern ideals of life with the traditions she grew up with.

Crash closes I-65

THORNTOWN, Ind. -- A crash involving four tractor-trailers spilled fuel and transmission oil across the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 Wednesday, prompting state police to close a 10-mile stretch of the highway for several hours.

New businesses open in Bloomington

Bloomington is pulling in new businesses. Three new enterprises are making the downtown area their home. The Underground, Yat's, and Megagrooves are all opening on, or within a block of Kirkwood Ave. Shawn Laszlo, Denny Laszlo, and Steve Poole own the AT&T kiosk in the Indiana Memorial Union and decided to expand their business and open a wireless store, called The Underground.

New cabaret project 'Candy and Friends' debuts Saturday

New cabaret project 'Candy and Friends' debuts Saturday The Bloomington Playwright Project presents the debut of 'Candy and Friends' at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 17 at the BPP, located at 322 S. Washington St. The mini-cabaret features four cabaret local artists: Cairril Adaire, William and Christine Shriner and Shani Wahrman. The performers will share songs and stories in an intimate setting. More information and tickets are available by calling the Project at (812) 355-9001.

For his third album, MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water, David Banner has included enough featured artists to make it a compilation CD of some of today's most popular rap artists instead of a solo disc. Although the album features artists such as Nelly, 8-Ball, Lil' Flip and Busta Rhymes, there is nothing spectacular about this latest disc from Banner.

T Bone Burnett goes back to roots, movies

A combination of blue grass, blues and folk music, the soundtrack to the motion picture Cold Mountain has a charming feel to it. Produced by Grammy winner T Bone Burnett, the compilation includes new music from such award-winning artists as Alison Krauss, Gabriel Yared and Jack White, as well as the Sacred Harp Singers at Liberty Church. The greatest aspect of the album is the way in which many of the songs tell simplistic tales of people and their emotions in an easily relatable manner. The soft, flowing strings of banjos, violins and guitars take a backseat to the lyrics, which are filled with feeling.

Cute Brit only thing 'Goode' about 'Liberty'

Vampires don't bite but 'Time' DVD does

Although the raging war in Underworld has been described as "Romeo and Juliet with vampires and werewolves," it feels quite distant from the Bard's original tale or something like West Side Story and much closer to other thrillers like The Crow or Blade. No matter; Underworld is a sleek success starring the beautiful Kate Beckinsale as Selene, a vampire whose allegiance falters when she meets Michael (Scott Speedman), a human who is mysteriously important to the werewolves.

'Great Highway,' great record

While glancing at the track list for this album, one will notice a seemingly strange collection of names: Salvador Sanchez, Duk Koo Kim and Pancho Villa. In singer Mark Kozelek's words, these were people who "struggled when they were young, lived fast, then died." A fitting statement when you hear the recurring themes of nostaligia, reflection and hope present on Ghosts of the Great Highway.
