Crash closes I-65

THORNTOWN, Ind. -- A crash involving four tractor-trailers spilled fuel and transmission oil across the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 Wednesday, prompting state police to close a 10-mile stretch of the highway for several hours.\nThe crash happened at about 3:45 a.m., as traffic was slowing down because of an earlier accident involving another truck on the highway about 30 miles northwest of Indianapolis, state police Sgt. Jay Kistler said.\nThree trucks had slowed down with the traffic when another truck slammed into the last one in the line, causing a chain reaction, police said.\nBoone County sheriff's Maj. Jeff Keller said investigators did not immediately know why the last trucker did not also slow down.\nThe driver of the last truck was the only one injured. He was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, police said.\nAll four of the trucks remained upright, but clean up of the spilled fuel and oil left both northbound lanes closed for several hours. The lanes were reopened by midday.\nThe driver of the truck involved in the earlier crash, Michael Lewis, 42, of Lexington, Ohio, suffered serious head injuries and was taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital, Kistler said.
