Cubs warming up, beat Oakland

CHICAGO -- Moises Alou hit a two-run homer and Carlos Zambrano won his fourth straight decision, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics, Sunday. Zambrano (8-2) outpitched Oakland starter Barry Zito, giving up one run on five hits and striking out eight in 6 2-3 innings. The 23-year-old left to a standing ovation and lowered his ERA to 2.25 -- second-best in the National League behind Tom Glavine.

Griffey hits 500th career home run in Reds victory

ST. LOUIS -- Ken Griffey Jr. trotted around the bases as if it was just another home run. It was hardly that. Griffey hit a 2-2 pitch from Matt Morris into the right-field stands and went right into the record books as the 20th player to hit 500 home runs Sunday. The Cincinnati Reds star ended a frustrating stretch with his leadoff homer in the sixth inning, becoming the sixth-youngest player to hit 500, in a 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Offseason brings changes to IU

Coming off the school's first losing season in 30 years, and missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1985, the IU basketball program has seen a slew of changes during the off season. With the loss of assistant coaches John Treloar and Ben McDonald, IU coach Mike Davis brought in former Utah interim coach Kerry Rupp to help add discipline and organization to the Hoosier program. "My former coach in college attended a basketball camp that he conducted in Utah and said this guy is like a machine," Davis said. "I needed energy.

Inventure to open doors Thursday

Small businesses in Bloomington will soon have another place to call home as Inventure will hold its grand opening Thursday. Inventure, a new facility located in the IU Research Park, created by a network of Bloomington services, including IU, the Indiana Small Business Development Center and Bloomington, will cater to entrepreneurs in Bloomington.

Indiana resident shot, killed while visiting Minnesota ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A man who was shot to death in St. Paul has been identified as an Indiana man. Desmond Tremaine Cooper, 23, of Gary, apparently was visiting people in the Twin Cities when he was shot several times in the upper body late Wednesday, police said Friday.

Bloomington woman wins $36,000

INDIANAPOLIS -- A Bloomington woman won $36,000 on the "Hoosier Millionaire" television show broadcast Saturday. Phyllis Woods advanced to the playoff round with $18,000 to compete against Thomas Yates of Paragon, who had $15,000. Yates' pick of $2,000 put him at $17,000, not enough to pass Woods. Woods doubled her winnings in the bonus round.

Former nurse pleads guilty to drug charges

MARION -- A former nurse accused of illegally dispensing morphine and other medications to nursing home patients has agreed to plead guilty to three felonies, her attorney said Saturday. Peggy Couse, 41, of Jonesboro will admit three of the six felony counts of dealing a controlled substance that she had faced, said attorney Shane Beal of Marion. She will enter the pleas during an appearance Monday in Grant Superior Court. Beal declined to comment further on the case.

Panel: No link between Iraq, al-Qaida

WASHINGTON -- Bluntly contradicting the Bush administration, the commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks reported Wednesday there was "no credible evidence" that Saddam Hussein had ties with al-Qaida. In a chilling report that sketched the history of Osama bin Laden's network, the commission said his far-flung training camps were "apparently quite good." Terrorists-to-be were encouraged to "think creatively about ways to commit mass murder," it added.

Trustees move money to COAS

The IU board of trustees approved a measure that would allocate $3 million from the "Commitment to Excellence," or CTE fee, to support life sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences during a trustees meeting Friday. Conflict arose after recent reports contended that the trustees had misappropriated funds from the CTE fee in order to cover for recent losses within the IU-based Indiana Genomics Initiative, or INGEN.
