'Along Came' a DVD with decent extras

Reuben Feffer (Ben Stiller) assesses risks for a living, and boy does he think that his new marriage is a sure deal. But, while on the honeymoon with his new wife, Lisa (Debra Messing), hooks up with a hot nudist scuba instructor named Claude (Hank Azaria). \nAfter leaving his new wife on the island with Claude, Reuben goes back to his insurance company job. After an incredibly short time, especially considering how long he's been with Lisa, Reuben runs into Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston), a cute, freewheeling, risk-taking former classmate, and pretty soon he's falling for her. \nStiller is adorably neurotic -- much like his character in "Meet the Parents" -- a role he plays perfectly. Aniston and Stiller have a good onscreen chemistry, and their romance is believable, despite their obvious differences. A subplot involving Reuben's best friend, former child star, Sandy (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), provides some of the best comic relief in the movie. Hoffman, who is one of the best supporting actors around, is truly gifted in comedy, and even steals a scene or two from the hilarious Stiller. \nThe extras on this DVD are nothing particularly stellar -- there are the obligatory deleted scenes and a 10 minute making-of featurette, which isn't as horrible as some making-of documentaries I've seen, but isn't as good as some others. There are outtakes, which seem like they could be a promising addition to the DVD, but minus a funny exchange between Stiller and Alec Baldwin, most fall flat. \nOne extra caught my eye, however -- a featurette entitled "Rodolfo Goes to Hollywood." This incredibly silly 5-minute short follows the film's ferret star, Rodolfo, to the red carpet premiere of "Along Came Polly." The people screaming for the animal upon arrival are obviously instructed to do so and couldn't act their way out of a paper bag, but the cute featurette is a nice touch to an otherwise run-of-the-mill DVD.
