The Olympic quest

As a few more IU athletes enter the Olympic Trials, vying for a trip to the 2004 Athens Games, some sportive table-talk on the idea of "going for the gold" seems appropriate. One view on the Olympic quest is the opinion of an author who himself was a world-class modern pentathlete and Olympic wrestling coach. His estate, Foxcatcher Farm, was a national training center for Olympic athletes in four sports.

Youth served at IU Soccer Day Camp

The first session of the IU Soccer Day Camp began this week at the Karst Soccer Complex. The camp is directed toward children who are not old enough to attend the residential camp held later in the summer. The day camp is a tradition started several years ago by an IU men's soccer team assistant coach. This year IU assistant coach Todd Yeagley, son of legendary coach Jerry Yeagley, is in charge of teaching the youngsters the basics of soccer.

In my 22 years of watching sports, I'd like to think I've witnessed some of the most captivating moments in sports competition. I've witnessed some guy in a #23 jersey hit a step-back jumper to win the '98 NBA Finals, Kirk Gibson's walk-off home run in the '88 World Series, Buster Douglas knocking Mike Tyson into the next world and (my personal favorite) the Music City Miracle. Now, I know the sports world seems to slow down a bit during the summer, but nothing comes close to what I witnessed this past weekend.

Behold! I have found the weakness inherent in women. The Achilles' heel that allows guys to gain access to hundreds -- yes, hundreds -- of women of all ages and backgrounds. Single men, listen up: Even you can use the knowledge I attained in the past week. It revolves around the most vicious and unstoppable woman-baiting creature known to man: the baby animal. In my case, it was my family's 7-week-old Shetland Sheepdog puppy.

Hoosier sprinter primed for U.S. Olympic Trials

Visitors to IU track meets this season were treated to a spectacle rare to IU men's track until recently: a national caliber sprinter. Redshirt freshman David Neville, a tall, lanky Merrillville, Ind., native was undefeated at home meets and produced several remarkable performances for IU this season. The next 10 days will be Neville's most difficult challenge as he will attempt to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team at the Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif.

I can still be famous

My continuing quest for fame appeared to have come to a dead end. After getting a B+ in magazine writing and being initially rejected for a position as a summer columnist, I realized I might not become the famous journalist I expected, and I might not even win a Pulitzer. Brown County Playhouse premiers 'The Foreigner'

Brown County Playhouse premiers "The Foreigner" tonight, its second play of the season. Written by American playwright Larry Shue in 1983, "The Foreigner" is a comedy following two Englishmen in Georgia through their fishing lodge escapades.

Young actors take on Shakespeare

The Bloomington Playwrights Project stage will be invaded by a group of young artists performing William Shakespeare's comedy "Twelfth Night," which begins tonight and runs through Sunday. The group has been working together for four weeks and promises to deliver a twisted comedic plot full of laughs, mistaken identities and crazy schemes.

End the horror in Sudan

The region of Darfur in western Sudan has been in chaos for over a year, but only recently have world leaders publicly denounced it. U.S. officials and human rights groups accuse the Janjaweed, a militia of Arab nomads, of carrying out a campaign of ethnic cleansing in Darfur, often in cooperation and with the aid of Sudanese authorities. The Janjaweed are pillaging, raiding, murdering and raping. It is a crisis which desperately needs attention.

Student composers featured in harp semifinals

Recent IU doctoral graduate and composer Mischa Zupko was never interested in composing for the harp. But, a few years ago when he heard harpist and then-IU student Maria Luisa Rayán wanted to work with a composer on a harp composition, he jumped at the opportunity. Rayán was one of the most accomplished harpists to come through IU, having finished second twice and eighth once at the USA International Harp Competition.

Biology professor, 60, dies in Sweden

After devoting 33 years of his life to teaching, professor William J. Rowland died June 27. A full professor in biology, Rowland had a special interest in marine biology. It was his academic work that sent him to Sweden to work on a research project. He died of a massive heart attack there at the age of 60. His daughter, Marijke Rowland, said the project was almost completed.

Former journalism professor dies at 80

Richard Yoakam, a long-time professor of journalism and broadcasting at IU for 32 years, died June 30. He was 80. Yoakam, who accepted a faculty position at IU in 1957 and retired from the University in 1989, died at his home in Bloomington. Yoakam was born in Pittsburgh, and graduated from the University of Iowa Department of Journalism.

IU offers high school diplomas

Since 1999 the Independent Studies Program has included IU High School as a means for students to earn their high school degrees from a distance. Students enroll and take classes online taught by both IU professors and high school teachers. "The students never enter a classroom and only know their teachers by e-mail," said IU High School Director Dan Bopp.

Anticipating the Cure's self-titled new release, the first original composition since 2000's Bloodflowers, which vocalist/guitarist Robert Smith insisted at the time was the finale of the band's arduous 25-year musical journey, I found much more disappointment that excitement at the uninventive 11-song album.
