Textiles classes emphasize artistic creations

An array of colorful yarns rest on the loom. Long bundles of white fibers sit on the table top waiting to be dyed. Woven baskets made of yarns and beads, a woven dress and patterned fabrics are all on display in the hall. The large classroom on the second floor of the Fine Arts building is home to students pursuing the mixed media of textiles at IU.

Remember high school fads? When people stopped thinking for themselves and joined the crowd, doing whatever the metamind told them to? When Tamogatchis became appealing, Survivor held meaning and those little Pog things looked like a wise investment? However, the high king of all stupid fads would definitely have had to be anything and everything Hot Topic. I do not know what kind of people first bought clothing at that store, but I think most of us experienced a Hot Topic wave in our high schools.

High school highjinks

Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis is in a boil over the suspension of sophomore English teacher and newspaper adviser Chad Tuley. The school's student newspaper, Pilot Flashes, reported Nov. 12 on a student who was arrested for murder. Shortly thereafter, Tuley was suspended with pay. Since then, Tuley has been reinstated as a teacher -- but not as newspaper adviser. While the school board met Friday and the issue was raised, a resolution doesn't seem to be on the horizon.

IU places 30th at Nationals

The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute was a sloppy, wet and muddy mess Monday. As the IU women's cross country team ran the course's two three-kilometer loops in the NCAA Championship meet, mud caked their spikes and legs. Rain from the preceding weekend riddled the course with slippery spots.

The men's cross country team finished its season one week ago at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute. The team finished 18th overall, the third straight top 25 finish for the Hoosiers. IU placed 12th last year.

Tanker leaks oil into Delaware River

PHILADELPHIA -- Divers found a six-foot gash on the tanker that leaked 30,000 gallons of crude oil into the Delaware River and created a 20-mile-long slick that killed dozens of birds and threatened other wildlife, officials said Sunday.

Deputy prime minister says Iraqi elections must go ahead

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraq's deputy prime minister said holding elections in January will be "a serious challenge," but Sunday he insisted they must go ahead as scheduled. As part of the effort to address security concerns, U.S. troops and Iraqi paramilitary police arrested 43 suspected insurgents in the northern city of Mosul, the military said.

5 students injured in Valparaiso slashing
