Bush to address Social Security, immigration in State of the Union

WASHINGTON -- President Bush is ready to challenge Congress to approve a stack of politically divisive measures he has proposed before without success, from major changes in Social Security to a loosening of the nation's immigration laws.

BFC to hear proposed changes for NCAA

The face of intercollegiate athletics could change with an approved proposal today by The Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics, which is made up of an alliance of faculty representatives, including IU professor Bob Eno. The coalition is proposing a draft that outlines three changes to the NCAA bylaws in five areas; admission of athletes, awarding of scholarships, curricular integrity, time commitments of athletes and academic advising for players.

Indiana clocks divided across state counties

Daylight saving time is sponsored by 47 states across the country, but Indiana is one of three states that does not fast forward and rewind the clock once a year. The Indiana legislature has debated the issue of DST for about four decades, and now newly instated Gov. Mitch Daniels, much like Benjamin Franklin in 1784, wants the issue resolved.

FAFSA question might be removed

Since 2000, every student who has applied for financial assistance or filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) answered a question that is being debated in Washington. Last Monday, an independent congressional committee recommended to Congress that the question on FAFSA forms asking students if they have been convicted of a drug crime be removed from the form, claiming it was irrelevant and deterred students from applying for aid.

ArtsWeek celebration paints different picture Each year for ArtsWeek, IU showcases many different types of art. However, this year it's doing something never done before: IU is going to show how the finished artwork is created. This year's theme for ArtsWeek 2005 is "Exploring the Creative Process." This special week will allow audiences to view not only the many different types of art that people living in Bloomington have to offer but also the process they go through when creating their masterpieces.

New structures planned to fit with campus style

From IDS reports The two newest buildings on the IU campus will be familiar additions to most students. The IU Board of Trustees approved the Multidisciplinary Science Building Phase II and the new Ashton Center projects at their Friday meeting. Both projects will change the face of campus, and both will feature architecture designed to blend in with the look and feel of existing buildings.

IU Auditorium hosts 42nd Street musical

The story that began the musical genre of "a star is born" and spawned a slew of movie musicals during Hollywood's depression era comes to the IU Auditorium Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8 p.m. Although "42nd Street" originally was a 1929 film, Warner Brothers remade it as a musical in 1933 with choreography by Busby Berkeley and introduced a number of classic Hollywood stars.
