For Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, the streets were filled with support

Lori Zerface underwent chemotherapy treatments Friday afternoon. Saturday, she arrived at the Bloomington Breast Cancer Awareness Walk full of energy and ready to walk. She joined 66 breast cancer survivors and more than 1,000 walkers at the event. The high school teacher wore a baseball cap over her pink bandanna and walked briskly with a smile on her face. "I haven't missed a day of teaching," said Zerface, a teacher at Hoosier Hills Career Center.

IU's win streak ends after 2 Big Ten losses

The IU women's volleyball team abruptly ended its winning streak this weekend with losses to Ohio State and Penn State. The momentum that had been leading the Hoosiers fizzled Friday as they lost 30-26, 30-20 and 30-22 to the No. 18 Buckeyes and then 30-24, 30-10 and 30-18 to the No. 4 Nittany Lions Saturday. "Both games were tough losses for us this weekend," IU head coach Katie Weismiller said. "Each time we came out strong in the first set, but our passing and serving needed to be worked on."

3 Hoosiers reach final in Classic this weekend

For the second straight year, three Hoosiers on the women's tennis team have reached the finals of the top three brackets in the Hoosier Classic. This year, senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan were able to cash in victories in the top two brackets against their Notre Dame opponents. With long baseline rallies, No. 82 Batty frustrated No. 54 Brook Buck from the very beginning as she cruised 6-2, 6-2 in the finals of the Flight A bracket.

Quirarte knows where he needs to be to lead

While finishing strong is crucial in any sport, sophomore Santiago Quirarte of the IU men's golf team has found out this season that how you start can be just as important. Quirarte's 73.67 scoring average is second on the team, yet it is clear Quirarte hasn't been getting off to the best starts so far this season. Quirarte averages 74.8 for his first and second rounds and 71.3 in his final rounds. And while head coach Mike Mayer tries to break in his talented freshman class early in the season, he looks for Quirarte to become a more consistent presence in tournaments.

Hardy 'receives' praise, shines in conference debut

MADISON, Wis. -- Before the start of the football season, most IU fans probably knew freshman wideout James Hardy as the basketball player who played football. With five touchdowns in his first four college football games and an unflappable sense of confidence, the 6'7" starter is quickly becoming the football player who also plays basketball.

IU finishes 8th at Loyola Lakefront Invite

The No. 19 men's cross country team competed in its final warm-up competition Saturday morning at Chicago's Loyola Lakefront Invitational. The Hoosiers again competed without senior All-Americans Sean and John Jefferson and Stephen Haas. Senior Eric Redman, IU's top finisher in its first two meets, also did not race.

IU beats No. 22 Michigan, falls to unranked Spartans

For the IU women's soccer team, 2005 looked a lot like 1994 this weekend. After beating the No. 22-ranked Michigan Wolverines for the first time since 1994 Friday, the Hoosiers lost to the Michigan State Spartans at home for the first time since the same year. IU opened the weekend with a win against the Wolverines, its first victory against a ranked team this season. The Hoosiers were led by goals from senior captain Kristen Zmijewski and sophomore forward Kristen Radcliffe. The stat sheet told a different story for IU, as the Hoosiers were out-shot 20-14 and had less chances than the Wolverines on corner kicks. Despite the statistical disparities, IU made the best of its opportunities on the field to earn the victory.

Another 1st: Hoosiers defeat No. 13 Michigan

The season of firsts continued for the IU field hockey team as it emerged from a weekend road trip with two victories, defeating No. 13 Michigan and Kent State University. On Friday, the Hoosiers recorded a 3-1 victory over Michigan, marking the first time the Hoosiers have defeated the Wolverines in six attempts. The win also put the Hoosiers at 2-0 in the Big Ten for the first time in the program's six-year history. "The win over Michigan is another big milestone for this program," head coach Amy Robertson said. "This has been a season of firsts in many different ways. The key to this win was our effort and intensity."

Hoosiers off the pace again in Notre Dame Invitational

The IU women's cross country team said that after racing for three consecutive weeks, it will need the two weeks of rest it has coming before its next meet. The effects of their brutal schedule were evident once again as the Hoosiers finished 16th out of 24 teams Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational. Junior Jessica Gall led IU for the second straight week with a time of 17:45, but was well off the winning pace of 16:36, run by Notre Dame's Stephanie Madia. Madia lacked a supporting cast, though, as Illinois and Michigan finished ahead of the Fighting Irish. The Wolverines took home first place.

Group attacks unfair labor

About 30 students from No Sweat!, a student group against sweatshop labor, gathered at the Sample Gates last Thursday to rally for a new University clothing policy that will stem the amount of IU merchandise made in sweat shops. The group wrote and signed a letter detailing the plan, with the intention of delivering to IU President Adam Herbert in person. The group marched to his office, only to find Herbert was absent, but his secretary was happy to take a message.

Penn State snaps Hoosier win streak

It had been 322 days, 12 games and a national championship win since the IU men's soccer team last tasted defeat before this weekend's matches. The Hoosiers walked away from Friday's matchup with Penn State with their first loss of the season and their streak broken after a 2-1 overtime loss. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Penn State scoring in their own goal 12 minutes into the game. Junior Josh Tudela made a run on the left flank and made a cross that a Nittany Lion defender deflected into the net.

Crowd control

MADISON, Wis. -- "Crowds help win games" seemed to be the mantra of Coach Hoeppner to IU fans. Unfortunately on Saturday afternoon, the Hoosiers were the away team to a University of Wisconsin crowd of more than 82,000 -- a community known as Mad Town. After watching the game, it became increasingly apparent why the Badgers have won ten straight home games dating back to last season. From the top of the press box, the student sections at Camp Randall Stadium were situated on the left side of the field. While there may have been only 10,000 students at the game, it was a seamless flow of fans who gathered and garnered cheers at the expense of Hoosier hiccups and hang-ups.

Badgered and Beaten

MADISON, Wis. -- Going into Saturday's game with Wisconsin, IU's focus centered on stopping Badger running back Brian Calhoun. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, Wisconsin proved it has just as much talent at wideout as it does in the backfield. Receivers Brandon Williams and Jonathan Orr combined for 10 receptions, 241 yards and three touchdowns in the Badgers' 41-24 win Saturday over IU. "We came out with a good game plan, and we were able to stop the run, but you have to do it both ways or they will exploit you," senior defensive lineman Russ Richardson said. "We lost focus on the pass game, but we'll come back and do it next week."

Manning-Harrison tie Young-Rice for most TDs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison tied Steve Young and Jerry Rice for the NFL record of most touchdown passes between a quarterback and a receiver with their 85th connection Sunday. The only question left now for the Indianapolis duo is what the final records will be when they quit playing. "It kind of hits me knowing the fact it's still early in both our careers," Harrison said after the Colts beat Tennessee 31-10.

Boat carrying tourists capsizes in N.Y., 21 dead

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -- A boat carrying tourists on a senior citizens' cruise overturned Sunday on a lake in upstate New York, killing at least 21 people and sending more than two dozen others to a hospital. Authorities were investigating whether a large passing tour boat created a wake that caused the accident, Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland said. The 40-foot, glass-enclosed Ethan Allen capsized about 3 p.m. on Lake George about 50 miles north of Albany in the Adirondack Mountains. The accident apparently happened so fast that none of the passengers were able to put on a life jacket, Cleveland said.

Bush considering nominees for 2nd high court vacancy

WASHINGTON -- President Bush is watching his first Supreme Court nominee, Chief Justice John Roberts, take the helm of the high court Monday while weighing his options for nominating a second justice who also could shape the bench for years to come. "He's still working," White House chief of staff Andy Card said Sunday about the president's effort to choose a replacement for retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. "Still considering lots of options."

Displaced DeLay pledges active role in House leadership, Republican agenda

WASHINGTON -- A defiant Tom DeLay, removed as House majority leader because of a criminal indictment, said Sunday he can do his job even without the title and pledged to continue his close partnership with House Speaker Dennis Hastert in pushing the GOP's agenda. The Texas Republican known for keeping colleagues in line and raising prodigious amounts of cash to help elect GOP candidates said he is only guilty of working to defeat Democrats. "But that's not illegal," he said. Yet some House Republicans said the fund-raising conspiracy case in Texas has plunged DeLay back into the GOP pack.

Suicide attacks kill 26, injure 101 in Indonesia

BALI, Indonesia -- Police raised the alert level for Indonesia's capital and the president warned of more attacks Sunday as a chilling video shot the day before showed a suspected bomber clutching a backpack and strolling past diners moments before one of three suicide bombings killed 26 people on Bali. The near-simultaneous bombings on the resort island also injured 101 people, including six Americans. The attacks apparently were planned by Southeast Asia's two most-wanted men, who are believed to be connected to an al-Qaida-linked group, said Maj. Gen. Ansyaad Mbai, a top Indonesian anti-terror official.

Scaring up customers

I hope you have everything set for Halloween. After all, you only have ... What? There are still 28 days left?!! Nevertheless, costumes, props, decorator items and CANDY, CANDY, CANDY appeared at the start of September. Fellow connoisseurs of the local Wal-Mart might have observed the room normally dedicated to gardening supplies is already filled with equipment for celebrating the holiday on a monumental scale: giant inflatable grim reapers, fog machines, Christmas lights rigged with black light bulbs, animatronic dancing pirates and more. It's an old joke that stores bring out Christmas stuff earlier and earlier -- but, there's an economic reason: the Thanksgiving-to-New Year's period sees the year's greatest amount of consumer spending. Sales during this period are critical to many industries: jewelry, for example. No wonder stores want us in the spirit early.

Hit-and-run with deputy sheriff leads to 1 arrest

A 40-year-old Bloomington resident was arrested Saturday evening after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident, according to the Bloomington Police Department report. Donald Hobbs, the alleged offender, probably couldn't have picked a worse car to hit. BPD Officer John Kovach responded to a call from a driver who said he was rear-ended by a vehicle at a traffic light on West Third Street. The victim, police said, turned out to be an off-duty Monroe County deputy sheriff who had a detailed description of what happened, the license plate and Hobbs' physical features.
