Local artists show what democracy means to them

Local graffiti artist Julian Hensarling said for simply writing on a wall, many of his fellow graffiti artists have spent years in jail – a punishment, he believes, that does not fit the crime. Hensarling and four other local graffiti artists prepared pieces for “Writing on the Wall,” an exhibit exploring the intersection of graffiti and democracy on display at the School of Fine Arts Gallery. It’s a change of pace for artists who are usually prosecuted for vandalism.

Hoosiers dine in Spartan hell

EAST LANSING, Mich. – At the end of IU’s 103-74 loss to Michigan State, Spartan guard Drew Neitzel kissed the “S” in the middle of the court – a tradition for graduating seniors at the Breslin Center on Senior Day. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers likely kissed their Big Ten title hopes goodbye.

Impressive finish falls short of title

The Hoosiers didn’t place as high as they hoped to but still pulled off an impressive showing, as a team and individually, finishing second at this weekend’s Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships in East Lansing, Mich.

IU goes 4-0 in team’s 1st Elite Six Tournament

IU coach Barry King and the water polo players were confident they were going to be an improved and more prepared team in the Elite Six Tournament this past weekend. In College Park, Md., the tournament featured the top two teams from each of the three divisions of the Collegiate Water Polo Association.

Hoosiers close out regular season with win

Senior guard Nikki Smith gave the IU women’s basketball program all four years of her college career, which were full of coaching changes, roster turnover and adversity. Sunday against Penn State, her teammates and Hoosier fans gave her a winning send-off in her final game at Assembly Hall.

Activist-actor Martin Sheen to receive medal from Notre Dame

Activist-actor Martin Sheen will be honored by the University of Notre Dame with its Laetare Medal for his humanitarian work, the school announced Sunday. Sheen, who starred as a U.S. president who was a Notre Dame graduate in NBC’s “The West Wing,” is to receive the medal at the school’s May 18 commencement.

The Oscars this year had plenty to offer when it came to fashion. As the stars paraded down the red carpet, there were definitely some fabulous dresses that really stood out in my mind.
