IU drama presents 'Major Barbara'

The IU Department of Theater and Drama’s production of “Major Barbara” opens 7:30 p.m. Friday, with shows Feb. 27 and March 2 through 6, with an additional show at 2 p.m. March 6.

Artist brunch, discussion wraps up ArtsWeek 2010

National Guard case dismissed

INDIANAPOLIS — A federal judge Thursday dismissed a lawsuit alleging that a defense contractor concealed the risks of a cancer-causing chemical that nearly 140 Indiana National Guard soldiers may have been exposed to while serving in Iraq.

Expectations high for Big Ten's best men's team

The No. 7 IU track and field team, the highest rank team in the conference, will compete this weekend at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Minneapolis. The No. 18 women’s team will also compete this weekend at Penn State.

The Hoosiers were looking for a streak-stopper, but after a lackluster performance against the Badgers, their historically-long losing streak has reached nine games after a 78-46 loss.

Big Ten/Big East Challenge awaits Hoosiers

During the 2010 season’s first four games, the IU baseball team’s starting pitching staff averaged less than three innings of work per game. That number has to change, IU head coach Tracy Smith said, in time for the Hoosiers’ three-game trip this weekend for the Big Ten/Big East Challenge.


Step Show Controversy

Step team shares 1st in national finals after racial controversy

ATLANTA — After days of controversy over a white group’s win in a step competition, sponsor Coca-Cola said Thursday the second-place team, IU's Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, will share top honors. A YouTube video of the winning performance by a group of Zeta Tau Alphas from the University of Arkansas generated hundreds of comments, some of them inflammatory.

Obama tries to maintain middle-class connection

President Barack Obama grew up experiencing the hardships of poverty and divorced parents. He is no stranger to the struggles of a middle-class family, whether during economic downturn or emotional turmoil. In 1988, he entered Harvard Law School and became a Harvard Law Review editor. He served as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School for 12 years, becoming engaged in community service and civil rights law.  His background is rooted in middle-class America. So why do “everyday Americans” claim to see him as detached from their concerns, as an elitist?

Ex-officer pleads guilty in Katrina killing probe

In Hurricane Katrina’s chaotic aftermath, police shot six people — killing two — as they crossed a bridge. For years the case was a shocking symbol of the confusion and violence that swept through the flooded city. On Wednesday, it became a mark of shame for the police department. Michael Lohman, a retired lieutenant who supervised the department’s probe of the shootings, pled guilty to organizing a cover-up to conceal that police gunned down unarmed civilians.

Separate spheres operate between men and women in Ghana

Living as a female in the United States, I often take for granted how equally I am treated. Sure, there is the occasional sexist remark or rude gesture, but in general men treat me like an equal.However, at the University of Ghana in Legon, men feel it’s their duty to hoot and holler at women merely for walking around campus.
