Artist by day, bartender by night

It’s 2 p.m. and partly cloudy — the ideal time for Billy Graves to roll out of bed. After a busy night and busier morning of serving drinks and wiping tables, the 29-year-old IU alumnus wipes sleep from his hazel eyes — he’d managed six hours, this time — readjusts his signature mohawk and throws on a red Indiana shirt smudged with bright white paint. It’ll only get dirtier today.

Guest columnist: an egg story

·

Most days I start my morning with eggs. From time to time I hard-boil my eggs to eat whole or mash with mayonnaise to make a salad. Most days, though, I like fried eggs with a runny yolk or a scramble that is almost set. It doesn’t really matter which way I prepare them though; every time after eating I’m full of vitamins and protein and ready to tackle whatever is thrown my way. Which is why the thought of my eggs causing diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting, chills and a fever is enough to make me reconsider eating the food altogether. And that’s really unfortunate because I really like my eggs.

Guest columnist: Hold the Ivy

Prestige. When it comes to colleges, what is it but a focus on selectivity, exorbitant tuition fees and general snootiness? Many prospective college students rely on the U.S. News & World Report rankings when making their selection, and while there is no doubt that the top-ranked schools of Ivy League fame are excellent educators, the customary college rankings are rigidly and poorly defined.

Column: prophet of an angry God

·

“America, today, begins to turn back to God,” said a fiery Glenn Beck at his rally to restore honor in America. The problem lies less in the fact that Glenn Beck was speaking with a racially charged, egotistical authority rooted in the entertainment industry and more in the knowledge that to turn backward, one must have been facing forward first.

Make Labor Day a Day On, Instead of a Day Off

Historically, Labor Day — which, unlike other American holidays, does not recognize any particular group, event, individual or battle — celebrates workers and their contributions to our nation. But I think Labor Day is also a time to recognize the struggles of working people. Especially now, when — despite significant gains — workers and students are feeling more anxiety than festivity.
