NY plans Sept. 11 museum to remember experience

NEW YORK -- Visitors to the Sept. 11 memorial museum could relive the 2001 terrorist attacks in an "immersive" area that surrounds them with pictures of the falling towers, the sounds of police sirens and the last words of some of those who died at the World Trade Center.

Artist draws Lewis Carroll society to Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa -- In his day, Lewis Carroll was a writer, a mathematician, a photographer and a story teller. Today, the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" is an industry. Alice books are still printed 140 years later, artists keep drawing the Mad Hatter and Carroll's other fanciful characters and scholars continue producing books and papers on Carroll and his works.

Louisiana loses French flavor after hurricanes

Southern Louisiana endures, and New Orleans is champing to rebuild, but their unique flavor is bound to fade if the French Louisianans don't return. That community faces "probably the greatest catastrophe" in its history, said David Cheramie, who directs the state's Council for the Development of French.

Kinsey Institute gallery displays animal imagery in erotic art

The Kinsey Institute invites all to view its current gallery show, "Passionate Creatures," which focuses on animal imagery in art. The gallery is filled with paintings, sculptures, drawings and artifacts spanning more than 2,000 years, all encompassing this specific imagery and displaying its many different interpretations.

Local troupe offers free puppet theater

A little boy almost 3 years old eagerly claps as he sits on top of a book his mother just checked out of the library. His light-up shoes beam flashes of red in the dark theater as he kicks his feet together in excitement. Saturday, the Puck Players Public Theatre puppet troupe performed "The Little Red Hen" and "Chicken Little" free of charge to a large audience at the Monroe County Public Library.

Not just for museums, art can be purchased at shops along the Gallery Walk

If there was a metaphor for the diversity of art involved in Friday evening's Gallery Walk, it would be the refreshment tables -- salmon pâté next to candy corn. During the appropriately named "Downtown Gallery Walk" event, nine downtown art galleries collaborate to show their collections in a three-hour block of time. Friday evening, the public was allowed to tour Bloomington galleries from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Playoffs test speed, talent

Nine teams comprised of a writer, director and one to three actors will continue to compete this weekend in the 4th annual Bloomington Playwrights Project Playoffs. The Playoffs offer the chance for amateurs and veterans of the stage to come together to write, produce and perform nine new plays within 24 hours -- a breakneck pace compared to the months spent rehearsing already-scripted, full-length projects.

Scrap metal forms beautiful works for Argentine artist

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- The artist sculpted his big metal T-Rex from old train parts and gave it railroad spikes for teeth. He used scrap metal to build the giant ants and the crocodile on display in his studio behind a train station.

Literature prize to be awarded following last year's debate

New Orleans ends hiatus of famous jazz funerals

Tibetan Cultural Center hosts song lessons

Bloomington is home to many cultural centers. One such center is the Tibetan Cultural Center, located at 3655 S. Snoddy Rd., which is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the community about Tibetan culture. The center plays host to many programs, such as yoga classes, meditation sessions, cooking classes and lectures. A program titled "Songs of Marpa" has been running since Sept. 27 and will continue until Dec. 6.

Student photographer's work on display at local café

Leah Cornwell waits to be seized by the beauty of an object, and then she takes a picture of it. Her keen eye for the sublime has landed her work in a local gallery for the second time this year. A collection of the IU senior's photographs, taken while she was studying in Italy, is on display at Tutto Bène wine café through Oct. 30.

Fall Ballet features variety of music, dance during weekend

IU's ballet season is not limited only to "The Nutcracker" every Christmas. The IU Ballet Theater gave its first performances of the year Friday and Saturday at the Musical Arts Center which consisted of four pieces, including two world premieres. Many different styles of ballet were put on display by the dancers.

Award-winning 'Blast!' reconnects with Hoosier roots

Marching bands are not only a staple of high school football games, but occasionally one blasts off to international fame. "Blast!," which performed Thursday through Saturday at the IU Auditorium, is based on marching material standard to American high schools.
