For scenic designer, collaborative effort necessary to show’s success

As the opening night for “Dead Man Walking” nears, the technical crew is perfecting the final details of the show. Scenic designer and graduate student Jared Rutherford said creating and building the set for the stage has involved endless work and patience, but the experience has been an invaluable lesson.

Drumming workshop inspires participants

This weekend, downtown Bloomington experienced a transformation when the rest of the world invaded its streets for the annual Lotus World Music and Arts Festival. A similar transformation took place Sunday in the parking lot behind Athena when 20 people gathered for a Middle Eastern and North African drum workshop taught by local musician Anass Sentissi.

Sound designer plans logistics for memorable 1st production

As a sound designer in the theater, I have to look at the play as a whole and how sound is going to affect the show. Before a show is cast, I work with a production team that consists of a director, lighting designer, scenic designer, costume designer and others. As a team, we talk about what we want to convey on stage.

Artists bring the world to Bloomington

Reindeer, gently falling snow and woolen sweaters are not the first things you think of when Bloomington comes to mind. But this year Scandinavia appeared and extended its wintery hand to downtown, sharing hundreds of years of musical and cultural tradition.The 15th annual Lotus World Music and Arts Festival began gently this year compared to other years, opening Thursday night in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater with the Northern Realms concert. In the past, world-renowned world-fusion Balkan Beat Box explosively inaugurated Lotus Fest to begin the three day-long revelry and cultural exchange.Thousands of world music enthusiasts, including students and Bloomington residents, congregated downtown to hear a mostly new artist list. With bands spanning from Spain to Syria, Mongolia to Mexico and Brown County, Bloomington’s arguably largest cultural event delivered the rest of the world to southern Indiana.SLIDESHOW: Lotus Fest

Parisian nightlife mixes art, social times
