Indiana University Health is enacting a series of reforms aimed at hiring, and keeping, more in-house nursing staff. One of the moves, a change to on-call requirements for nursing staff, will be test run at the Bloomington hospital.

The first floor of 22-year-old Bloomington native Megan Pierce’s home is covered in thousands of Joker collectibles from DC’s “Batman” franchise. From life-size cardboard cutouts sporting the Joker’s infamous grin to action figures, rollerblades and a skateboard, the collection is part shrine, part time capsule.

To meet Indiana’s future nursing demand, it is estimated the state will need an additional 5,000 nurses by 2031, according to the Indiana Hospital Association. To reach that number, about an additional 1,300 nurses will need to graduate each year up until 2030. A state senate bill aims to loosen requirements to enter the field, as a start to fix the “cyclical” issue.

Homecoming weekend at IU is a hallowed tradition, a prodigious event where students and alumni alike celebrate everything that makes our school what it is. It can be easy, then, to spend the weekend on campus, whether at Memorial Stadium or along the parade route or at any one of the several alumni events. But part of the marvel of the weekend is Bloomington itself: just as Old IU leaves an indelible mark, so too does B-Town.

Nearly 30 city leaders, employees and community members met Wednesday to share their perspectives on the ongoing Showers West project and ideas to improve Bloomington public safety during a public work meeting between the council and the mayor’s office. By the conclusion of the meeting, Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson said the city will put decisions regarding the future of the Showers West building on hold until it can review funding options and unanswered questions associated with the project.

In the suburban town where I grew up, the only way to get anywhere was by car. Sure, you could walk if you wanted to, but only some neighborhoods and streets had sidewalks and everything was too far apart. Walking anywhere other than next door became a huge inconvenience. Since coming to Bloomington, I have been amazed at not only the presence of sidewalks but also the public transport system.
