The Indiana University Board of Trustees supported incorporating two new degree programs on various campuses during a meeting Dec. 1-2. Both degrees — forensic science and school psychology — will prepare students in academic and professional capacities. The Indiana Commission for Higher Education will have to approve the degrees, according to an IU News article.

IU freshman Ali Wolf won the Fall 2022 Student Designed T-Shirt Contest after people on campus voted Nov. 11. The new t-shirts with the winning design are available at the bookstore in-person and online.

Last year IU Health donated $400 million to the IU School of Medicine. Dr. Jay L. Hess, the dean of the school of medicine, said the funds will be dispensed over three years and over multiple projects including support for residency and fellowship opportunities in the hopes that more graduates decide to work in Indiana in healthcare and academic roles, according to a Herald-Times article.

It’s been nearly 50 years since the Roe v. Wade case when the U.S. Supreme Court allowed women to seek an abortion if they chose to do so, a News and Tribune article said. The precedent case was reversed earlier this summer and the Supreme Court is permitting states to interpret and add legislation based on how they view abortion.

The Gannett Foundation hosted its annual ‘A Community Thrives’ program recently. The challenge requires organizations to raise money in local crowdfunding campaigns before receiving allotted funds. Since crowdfunding, five nonprofits in Indiana will receive funds from the Gannett Foundation ranging from $5,250 to $100,000.

The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce hopes the board of Bloomington Transit will vote to expand Route 3 by 1.3 miles in the west direction to serve those in Park 48 and Ivy Tech facilities, according to a Herald-Times guest column. In his column, Eric Spoonmore, the president and CEO of Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, said City Council also supported this idea when they passed Resolution 22-16, a document sponsored by Councilmember Steven Volan.

After the passage of Senate Bill 1 in Indiana, The Satanic Temple is now suing the state over the near-total abortion ban, claiming it violates citizens’ abortion rights and infringes on the group’s religious beliefs, according to an IndyStar article. The group claims the new law is unconstitutional because it doesn’t account for people who became pregnant even with contraceptive use.

According to data from the Indiana Department of Health, there have been 667 deaths statewide due to drug overdoses in 2022 alone. 14 of those 667 deaths occurred in Monroe County.
