Why? at Rhino's 11/13/09

If I had to choose one album that defined my freshman year of college, I would hands down pick Alopecia by Why?. I can't even come close to being able to count the number of times I listened to that album.

Stand Tall: Halloween Show benefits Indiana forests

Nettles, Mindfreak, and Bishop of Norwich @ The Bishop on October 31st 18+; cover = donations Most college Halloween parties go like this: people dress up in costumes (usually either pieced together at Goodwill or skimpy enough to be featured in a Victoria's Secret window display) to drink excessive amounts of cheap beer (or Everlcear mixed with Koolaid), bob for apples, and play beer pong while a DJ (or someone's iPod) plays "Monster Mash" and any number of other unforgettable Halloween "classics" (or mainstream rap songs) until the sun rises, the cops come, or the booze runs out.

10.23 The Native Young, Tammar, Vollmar perform @ Collins

Hello readers, It's Mickey here and it's my first blog, so go easy on me! I saw some tasty treats this weekend and I wanted to tell you all about it. There was a small, low-key crowd seated comfortably in the Collins dorm lounge where big sounds were being produced by local bands The Native Young, Tammar and Vollmar. Tammar opened the show with their WIUX favorite, "The Last Line" from 2009's "Live From Bloomington" CD.

Kurt Vile and The Violators @ The Video Saloon 10/12/09

Kurt Vile and The Violators doing what they do best I went to The Vid last night to see some hazy bedroom pop and what I got was four long-haired dudes playing rock 'n' roll. Not too bad. I arrived right at the end of Normanoak's set (who knew a show at The Vid would start on time?) when Kurt Vile and company stepped out to grab a smoke and some of their merch.

Woven Hand @ Russian Recording 10/10/09

Those who attended the Woven Hand show on Saturday night at Russian Recording were kicked in the face by a set that was both terrifying and entrancing. Always at the peak of intensity when performing live, the brainchild of Woven Hand, David Eugene Edwards, showed why he is known for putting on intense concerts.

Nurses and Husband & Wife @ The Bishop 10/7/09

I took my first breath of the Bloomington music scene as soon as I moved into town two years ago. Ever since, I have been caught in sweet and sticky web of constantly watching musicians weave their creativity throughout the community.
