IU still best in state

CollegeHoops.net, a site I know nothing about, isn't putting too much weight on IU's rebuilding process or Purdue's resurgence last season. In their "State of '08" coverage of Indiana, the site has IU as the best program in the state.

Crean offers 2010 guard

Tom Crean has extended a scholarship offer to Jeffersontown (Ky.) High School junior guard Aaron Cosby, according to Jody Demling. The Louisville native is one of the top players in the state of Kentucky and some expect him to jump up to a four-star rating in the near future.

How important is it to recruit Indiana?

With apologies to Cem Dinc, there's nothing an IU basketball fan loves more than a homegrown product. "Recruiting Indiana" has been a hot topic in IU circles since the Hoosiers lost out on in-state studs like Greg Oden, Sean May and Dominic James a couple years ago. Since then, some Hoosier fans have argued that IU must "own" their state's recruits in order to return to powerhouse status. This season, the Hoosiers will have at least six players from the state of Indiana, Kory Barnett (Rochester), Devan Dumes (Decatur Central), Brett Finkelmeier (Carmel), Broderick Lewis (Lafayette Jeff) and Daniel Moore (Carmel). While that number is higher than it has been in recent years past, it must be noted that five of those players are walk-ons and the other (Dumes) is a junior college transfer who wasn't originally recruited by Indiana out of high school.

2010 recruit planning return trips to IU

Early in September, Class of 2010 recruit Aaron Cosby made an unofficial visit to the IU campus. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Louisville enjoyed his visit, and will be back according to Jody Demling. Demling is reporting that Cosby, a former UMass commit, will visit Miami University this weekend, IU the next, and likely IU's Hoosier Hysteria as well the next weekend.

He speaks! Kind of...

Former IU coach Kelvin Sampson released a statement today through his publicist in response to the not-so-nice things IU had to say about him in their letter to the NCAA.

IU sophomore safety Jerimy Finch was seen walking around the IU campus today with a protective boot on his leg.

"My only regret would be, if I had one, is that I didn't let them do what the hell they wanted to do. Maybe they would have been happier, won more, I don't know, but it just wasn't going to happen with me as the coach."

As promised. Getting some sleep, see you tomorrow. What was different about the program last year, through the eyes of a former player (When I was here) Coach Knight was tough, really tough. I've known a lot of those guys over the years, and they have unbelievable pride in what coach Knight's guys over the year. Coach (Mike) Davis gets a wrap on things, and again, I wasn't here, I don't know, but I'm really good friends with (Tom) Coverdale, I'm pretty good friends with Dan Fife, and they have a pride for what they did.

A few quick thoughts

If anyone knows of a good four-letter word for "slogging," I'll happily trim this post. Still working my way through this while intrepid reporter Tom Kirby types up a story on the whole thing for tomorrow's paper. In the meantime, I'll go ahead and throw some random thoughts up on the blog as they come to me, starting with those listed below.

Capobianco talks 2008-09 players

Chris Braswell (2009), Marquis Teague (2011) and Spencer Turner (2011) were among several recruits on campus this weekend, as were IU Class of 2009 commits Bobby Capobianco, Maurice Creek and Jordan Hulls. The recruits particpated in an open gym with the current Hoosiers yesterday afternoon, and although Kyle Taber and Matt Roth weren't participating, the rest of the players--at least the ones on scholarship, to my knowledge--played.

IU v. Michigan State live blog

MSU 39, IU 29 (Beginning of 4th) -- After a Spartan interception, Brett Swensen booted a another 45-yarder to make it a two score game. MSU 36, IU 29 (1:39 left in 3rd) -- So as a chorus (30,000 strong) rain down boos, let's recap. The Hoosiers were pinned deep on their one.

Showing some love for Jordy

We've heard plenty about Maurice Creek and Christian Watford, and now we've turned our attention to Ghana native Bawa Muniru, but what about the kid they call Jordy? Jordan Hulls will surely draw some crowds this winter, seeing that the IU commit hails from Bloomington.

Hoosier Hysteria update

The IU Athletics Department announced today that this year's Hoosier Hysteria will include not only the men's and women's basketball teams, but the IU volleyball program. Straying farther and farther away from Midnight Madness, the Hoosiers will begin their annual event when the Hoosier volleyball team takes on Ohio State at 7 p.m.

Short and sweet: Pritchard Q&A

Hey folks, I'll keep it short tonight, I know this is way late and the Muniru commitment is on everyone's mind anyway. We got the chance to chat with Tom Pritchard for a bit today, and I've posted some of the questions and answers from that session below.

Muniru commits

Hey folks, Late-night news here for you, but I thought you might want to know: Bawa Muniru committed to IU late tonight, Scout.com is confirming. This rounds out Tom Crean's first-ever full recruiting class, with Muniru representing the sixth and final scholarship Crean is allowed to dole out this year.
