Former Indiana University Bloomington Provost Rahul Shrivastav will officially take on the role of vice president for student success, IU announced Thursday.
Shrivastav has served as the interim vice president for student success since he left his position as Bloomington provost in February. The responsibilities of the university-wide role include overseeing enrollment services, student support programs and academic and curricular processes, a press release stated.
According to the press release, Shrivastav’s focus will include exploring how technology can help the university deliver more effective student support and preparing students for careers changed by artificial intelligence.
Shrivastav became IUB’s provost in 2022; under his leadership, IU Bloomington saw increased enrollment and applications. He is an IU alumnus and created 25 new academic programs and recruited dozens of new faculty, but his tenure was marked by a 2024 faculty no-confidence vote.
A motion for no confidence in Shrivastav by IUB faculty members passed with 91.5% of the vote after multiple free-speech concerns on campus, including the suspension of Palestine Solidarity Committee adviser Abdulkader Sinno and the cancellation of a Palestinian painter’s art exhibition at IU.
Shrivastav’s position in the hierarchy of the IU administration changed after the IU Board of Trustees reinstated the chancellor role at IU Bloomington. The former dean of the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, David Reingold, assumed the chancellor position in June 2025. The chancellor’s role includes supervising the Office of the Provost.
“Our responsibility now is to ensure that every student can fully benefit from these opportunities and graduate ready to create value wherever their lives and careers take them,” Shrivastav said in the press release announcing his appointment. “IU’s greatest contribution to Indiana and the world is the people we prepare, and I’m honored to lead this work to support student success.”
According to the IU salary listing for the 2027 fiscal year, Shrivastav is making $585,156 in the new role, up from $568,113 in the previous fiscal year as provost.
John Ciorciari was appointed Tuesday as the campus’s next provost after holding the position in an interim status, filling Shrivastav’s old role.
