Indiana University’s current interim provost has been appointed to fill the position permanently, as well as the role of executive vice chancellor of IU Bloomington, the university announced Tuesday in a press release.

John Ciorciari has served as interim provost since February. He succeeds previous provost Rahul Shrivastav, who left the position in February to assume a university-wide role he still serves in as interim vice president for student success.

Ciorciari was announced as a finalist for the provost and executive vice chancellor role and attended an on-campus town hall Sept. 28, fielding questions from faculty, staff and students.

As provost, Ciorciari will report to Chancellor David Reingold and oversee all academic units, faculty research and graduate and undergraduate education.

Before assuming the interim provost role, Ciorciari was the dean of the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies for two years.

Ciorciari was a professor and associate dean for research and policy engagement at the University of Michigan before coming to IU, according to his CV. He previously worked for the U.S. Department of the Treasury to create economic policy on Afghanistan and South and Southeast Asia, and he holds his law degree from Harvard Law School.

During the town hall, Ciorciari said his main priorities include supporting research, adding experiential learning opportunities and demonstrating IU’s value to Indiana. While serving as interim provost, Ciorciari helped redesign IU’s general education curriculum and was the co-chair of a task force involved in implementing the Chicago Principles, a set of free-speech guidelines.

Ciorciari will oversee searches for the next deans of the College of Arts and Sciences and the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the press release said.

“I’m excited to help build on our positive momentum at IU Bloomington and advance the academic priorities that make our flagship campus a leader among the nation’s public research universities,” Ciorciari said in the press release.

Ciorciari was selected by a search team of 27 faculty, administrators and students for an internal search, meaning a search that solely includes candidates who are already employees of the university.
