No. 2 Indiana men’s soccer junior goalkeeper Michal Mroz was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday following an eight-save spectacle against Washington on Sept. 18, handing the Huskies their only shutout of the season as the Hoosiers won 1-0.
“With the team we have, I don’t really want to have to save shots,” Mroz said after the Washington game. “When I’m called up, I know I have to do my job and every save just gives me more and more confidence.”
Through eight matches, Mroz holds a 0.38 goals against average, 87.5% save percentage, five clean sheets and seven wins, all atop the Big Ten among qualified goalkeepers.
Last season at the University of Evansville, Mroz was forced to make nearly three saves per game, yet he allowed fewer than a goal in each of the Purple Ace’s 20 matches, maintaining a 75% save percentage.
As a Hoosier this season, Mroz has faced a total of 24 shots on goal and only conceded three times, accounting for the Big Ten’s fewest goals allowed.
“He’s very confident right now,” Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley said after the Washington game. “He loves the shutouts, as our team does.”
Mroz and Indiana will return to the pitch at 8 p.m. Tuesday as the Hoosiers head north to take on No. 13 Wisconsin.
