The Office of International Services is Indiana University’s home for international student resources. From academic advising to employment authorization, the OIS offers a comprehensive guide for students that covers all areas of international study. Here’s some key information about the OIS:
Location and contact information
The Office of International Services building is located on the IU Bloomington campus in the Ferguson International Center at 330 N. Eagleson Ave. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Academic advising
There are several academic advising resources available across campus that the OIS helps students connect with. These resources include the Asian Culture Center, Latino Cultural Center and Writing Tutorial Services.
The ACC is located at 807 E. 10th St. and builds awareness of Asian American and Pacific Islander’s culture and history. The LCC, located at 715 E. Seventh St., provides programming and support for Latino students. The WTS, located inside Wells Library, provides one-on-one writing help with academic and professional writing.
Immigration Status
The OIS closely monitors changing immigration regulations. To ensure that you are maintaining your immigration status, regularly check all OIS emails and don’t hesitate to reach out to the office with questions.
It can be difficult to amend an immigration status violation, and things like volunteering, taking too many online courses or finishing your studies with an internship can impact your status. Be sure to speak directly with OIS before making any decisions that may affect your immigration status, or if you want to change your immigration status.
Student employment
Before you begin to look for employment opportunities, note that you must be authorized to work in the U.S. F-1 students need authorization for most categories of work, while J-1 students need authorization for any type of employment.
If you are authorized to work, IU has numerous resources to aid in the job search. Resources include Interstride, a global career development platform designed exclusively for international students and job fairs.
Campus involvement
The OIS can help you find your community on campus. IU hosts dozens of events to celebrate the annual International Education Week held the third week of November, including IU World’s Fare, a festival filled with culture, art and dance from around the globe.
Interested in language immersion? The OIS can match international students with another IU student or staff member to meet weekly during the semester and teach each other's languages. This can be a great way to not only learn another language, but also to build connections on campus.
International Ambassadors
International student ambassadors are here to answer any questions you may have about adjusting to life at IU and in the U.S. There are student ambassadors from more than 20 countries that are available to connect via Zoom, email and online chat.
Staff ambassadors from International Admissions are also available to help.
While studying at a large school like IU can be intimidating, finding guidance and community shouldn't be. If you have any questions regarding academics, events, admissions and more, the OIS is there to answer them.
