Matthew Erickson, an 18-year-old freshman from Valparaiso, died Wednesday night in his room in Read Center, according to a letter sent to students, faculty and staff of the University by Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson and Dean of Students Harold “Pete” Goldsmith.
Erickson’s roommate discovered him alone in their dorm room on the fifth floor of Beck in Read.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to Matthew’s family and friends,” the letter said. “The death of a student is a tragic occurrence that diminishes the entire university community.”
An autopsy took place Thursday afternoon, Associate Vice President for University Communications Mark Land said. However, the results have not yet been released. Land also said that the appropriate family members have been notified as of Thursday evening.
“The entire university family mourns the untimely, tragic loss of this young member of the IU community,” the letter said. “We extend to Matthew’s family and friends our heartfelt condolences.”
Counseling resources have been made available to Read residents. According to the letter, these resources are available to anyone wanting support in dealing with this event.
