IUPD arrest 2 students for allegedly throwing rocks off top of Teter Quad

Two students face preliminary felony charges after police arrested them for throwing rocks off Teter Quad and causing an estimated $15,000 worth of damage to vehicles below.\nIU Police Department Officer Ryan Corbett responded to a call from Officer Tom Kuhlenschmidt in reference to "strange noises" and car alarms at the 10th Street parking lot across from Teter at about 4:20 a.m. Thursday, said IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger in a press release. They searched the lot but could not find anyone there.\nAfter some time, the officers discovered two individuals throwing three-inch long rocks from the top of Teter Elkin, Minger said. According to the release, the two were throwing the rocks at parked cars, as well as passing vehicles.\nA 2002 X-Type Jaguar with an Indiana Dealer plate driving down 10th Street had been struck, and officers identified five other vehicles they believe may have been damaged by the rocks. Officers estimate the damage to each individual vehicle exceeds $2,500.\nMinger said Residential Programs and Services staff helped IUPD officers onto the roof of Teter Elkin. According to the release, both individuals tried to lie down to hide from police.\nOfficers arrested freshman Ryan C. Anderson, 19, and Wayne J. Russell, 18, on preliminary charges of criminal mischief, a class D felony, and public intoxication. Police believe the men gained access to the roof by removing screws from a window, Minger said.\nMinger said officers left notes on the vehicles they found damaged telling them to contact IUPD. He said they have no way of knowing if damage was already present prior to the incident without the input of the owners.
