Judging a justice

IDS columnists decide if Alito should be confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court

Confirm\nThe Democratic opposition to the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. is of little relevance to an outstanding record. As a result of the polarization of politics in American society, competing ideological views, as Alito's views on abortion, will always arise in Supreme Court nominations. The discovery of another John Roberts may be too much to hope for, and so I say let Alito on the high court. The American people elected George W. Bush knowing full well that he may have the opportunity to nominate one or more justices, and he has been granted the power legitimately to place a conservative judge on the court. It would be unrealistic to believe that Bush would nominate a judge with a varying set of beliefs from his own and that of his party. The fact that Alito is qualified, very qualified I might add, should render approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee.
