Musician, songwriter turns emotion into reality on stage

I was a few minutes early when I flung my buzz-bomb of a Buick nicknamed "The Red Hornet" around the corner of Third St. and South Washington St. I quickly found myself in my favorite secret parking place used when visiting the Bloomington Playwrights Project.\nI was attending an opening night reception that started at 7:30 p.m. to kick off the Cabaret Nouveau Series. The show "Slightly Deranged: A Thinking Woman's Tour D'Vorce," was written and composed by Bloomington local Krista Detor.\n"Slightly" is a one-woman show, if you don't count off-stage voices, that is.\n"The work is loosely autobiographical and based on a series of experiences over the past few years," Detor said. "I wrote the piece largely in order to deal with and integrate some personal issues and ideas. It follows my route from Portland, Ore. to the Florida Keys, and finally to Indiana. It's a kind of goofy look at the human psyche."\nThe BPP's Marketing Director Candace Decker created the Cabaret Nouveau series last year and directed "Slightly Deranged." \nThe show is "a slightly deranged but ultimately hilarious look at one woman's neuroses and how the world looks through her eyes," she said. "'Slightly' is about a woman whose experiences include meeting her biological parents, opening a restaurant, being left by her husband and left alone to raise a child -- all within a year."\nIn the show, special appearances are made by Decker, Assistant Director Kris Lee and BPP's October "HOT WET FUN" Cabaret Nouveau Series singer, Carmen Meyers. Detor is working on the release of a new CD which will be available for sale at the show and will include many of the songs in "Slightly."\nDecker said she is thrilled to open the series this season with Detor, who she said is an incredible singer/songwriter. \nArtistic Director Richard Perez echoes that thought when he said of Detor, "I had the benefit and the privilege of just seeing a run through of the show, and I think she is absolutely phenomenal. And it's going to be one of the best things we've ever had here"
