World Aids Day

World AIDS Day, coming up Dec. 1, has inspired many on campus to spread the word about the deadly disease and its effects.\nTuesday, IU student volunteers handed out free condoms and red AIDS ribbons at the Indiana Memorial Union activities desk. The condoms and ribbons were sponsored by Outreach Kenya Development, along with the IU Health Center, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered support services group and the Student Global AIDS Campaign.\nFlyers and AIDS fact sheets were also distributed to people as they passed by the display.\nJunior Mary Wright is a volunteer for Kenya Outreach Development.\n"Some people have been really interested to see what we're all about," she said.\nThe Kenya Outreach Development group will soon be building a clinic in a village in Kenya, with the help of contacts in the country.\nAlthough condoms were being freely distributed, Wright was quick to state that abstinence was the best solution to combat the spread of AIDS. But she said it is a choice that some are unwilling to make.\n"We understand that there are people who are going to have sex regardless, and they should be protected," Wright said.\nSenior Alanna Galati, the assistant director for Outreach Kenya Development, will speak about her group Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 400 E. Kirkwood Ave.\nThe World AIDS Day service of remembrance will begin at 6 p.m. and a reception/celebration of hope will be held at 7 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.\n"World AIDS Day brings awareness, and gives some time to reflect and remember those who died of AIDS," Galati said.\nMany events are planned for the remainder of the week leading up to World AIDS Day.\nNov. 28, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered support services group, along with others, will sponsor a selection of monologues from T-Cells and Sympathy, by Michael Kearns, 7 p.m. at the Georgian Room in the Indiana Memorial Union.\nOn World AIDS Day, Saturday, Dec. 1, Outreach Kenya Development is sponsoring a benefit concert at Rhino's Music Club, 323 1/2 S. Walnut, featuring four bands. Admission is $5. Before the concert, an interdenominational church service will be held at 6 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.
