'Ragtime,' 'Fiddler' on Auditorium slate

Musicals, concerts highlight 2001-2002 season

Nineteen events, including Broadway musicals, ballet performances, folk music and an acrobatic show, will entertain IU Auditorium audiences in the 2001-2002 season. The lineup features shows never before seen in Bloomington and the return of popular productions including "Rent" and the magic of David Copperfield, according to a press release.\nLegendary entertainer Marcel Marceau, who conducted workshops on campus April 16 and 17, will return to Bloomington in October to perform. Native American flautist and composer Robert Mirabal will also grace the Auditorium stage in October, combining Native American musical traditions with modern percussion and synthesized sounds.\nThe musicals in the 2001-2002 season include "Rent," "Ragtime," "Fiddler on the Roof" -- with the "quintessential Tevye," Theodore Bikel -- and "My Fair Lady." The musical lineup is a pairing of recent Broadway hits and classic favorites. "Cabaret," which won four 1998 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, is a modern take on the legendary show based on the 1929-1932 experiences of author Christopher Isherwood while he lived in Berlin, according to the show's Web site, www.cabaret-54.com.\nThe 2001-2002 IU Homecoming Show will feature the country, gospel and blues music of Willie Nelson. The concert will showcase new songs from Nelson's latest release, Milk Cow Blues. The album combines Nelson's folk stylings with the talents of guest stars including B.B. King, Susan Tedeschi and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, according to Plus One Media. Peter, Paul and Mary, also a folk favorite, will visit Bloomington in April of 2002. \nSatirist George Carlin, the first host of the sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live," will bring his comedy routine to the auditorium in November.\nFor ticket information, call the Auditorium at 855-1103 or visit www.iuauditorium.com..
