Alumnus celebrates new jazz album

Kyle Quass to feature music from new album

IU alumnus Kyle Quass will perform from 7-9 p.m. today at TIS Music Shop, 1424 E. Third St., as part of the store's Tuesday Night Jazz Series. The show, as with all Tuesday performances, is free.\nQuass will be featuring music from his new album Eye of the Beholder, which includes original jazz compositions, and songs by other jazz musicians such as Joe Henderson and Thelonius Monk. Playing with Quass is Jeff Hiatt on bass, Julian Douglas on percussion and Kenny Phelps on drums.\nThe concert will include "most of the new tunes, with slightly updated arrangements" to highlight the guest musicians, Quass said. The music will include drum chants, and will "integrate different instruments and improvisation into a more complete whole," he said.\n"I think Eye of the Beholder is one of the most exciting jazz albums to come out anywhere in a long time," said Ben McClelland, assistant manager at TIS. "The TIS Music Shop is committed to supporting local jazz musicians, and it is particularly pleasing to present someone with the style, originality and thoughtfulness that Kyle brings to this genre."\nQuass graduated from IU with a master's degree in jazz studies.
