Delta Gamma and Kappa Sigma win IU Sing

Hundreds of screaming students, dressed up as everything from fish to cowboys to monkeys, lit up the IU Auditorium this weekend in the 2001 IU Sing competition. Delta Gamma sorority and Kappa Sigma fraternity received the overall award for their routine entitled, "Off the Hook." IU Sing is sponsored by the IU Student Foundation, and 23 groups participated in this year's performance. Junior David Gerber, one of Kappa Sigma's songleaders, said the hard work of the past months paid off with their performance.

2001-02 room rate increase approved The board of trustees approved a 4 percent increase in room expenses for the 2001-02 school year at its Friday meeting. Only new students will pay the increase in room rates. Rates for returning students will be frozen. Meal plan prices will not increase.

Rock band Orgy to play Murat

The electro-grunge band Orgy will hit the Egyptian Room in Indianapolis tonight for a show that promises to provide plenty of high-energy music. The show is set to begin at 7:30. Orgy is touring in support of their second release, Vapor Transmission. The album had a strong opening week, debuting at the No. 16 spot on Billboard's Top 200 last October. The release drew varying responses -- Billboard praised the album as a science fiction epic while Wall of Sound brushed them off for resembling stuck-in-the-80s glam rockers.

Contest winners declared

The winners of the Web site design contest co-sponsored by Web Technology Club and Discover Financial Services were announced Saturday at a banquet held at the Bloomington Convention Center. Entrants had two days to construct an online shopping mall with a personalized feel. "The case was to design a virtual mall Web site," explained senior Kristin Wagner, WTC president. "The teams were to design a site that would make you feel like you were shopping at a mall so that you could visit specific stores if you knew what you were looking for and also browse if you were unsure."

Basketball game benefits hungry

Zeta Phi Beta sorority teamed up with Phi Beta Sigma fraternity to go head-to-head against Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Wednesday in the third annual charity basketball game "Clash of the Titans." The Zetas and the Sigmas beat the AKAs and the Alphas for the third year in a row. Senior Latasha Jordan, president of Zeta Phi Beta, said the event has some historical significance.

Rich people shouldn't get a break

Fugitive billionaire Marc Rich went out and bought himself a pardon, and the Republicans are going ballistic in Washington D.C. Maybe I'm being too harsh. Maybe Rich's ex-wife, Denise, didn't go up to Bill Clinton and give him $450,000 for his library in exchange for a pardon. But what we know for sure is Rich bought access to the presidential pardon process.

Police visited with friends, family and members of the Theta Chi fraternity where Korona had attended a party the Saturday before his untimely death.

IU swimmers sputter in Day 1

IU coach Kris Kirchner came into the Big Ten Championships with high hopes that his team would swim well. "I would like to come out of there with everybody swimming fast, at their best, and scoring their best," Kirchner said before the three-day meet, which began Thursday in Minneapolis. But when the Hoosiers jumped into the pool, his expectations fell short. Most of his hopes were dashed in the preliminaries.

The IU baseball team is taking its game on the road for the second consecutive weekend. This time, the Hoosiers will compete in the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. IU will meet three teams, facing Eastern Kentucky and Wagner Friday and Winthrop Saturday. It will finish the weekend in the consolation or championship game Sunday.
