Former cheerleader shares message

·

When Kelly Craig went on a vacation to Colorado with her family and boyfriend the summer after her freshman year at IU, she never would have guessed that two years later she would be telling hundreds of other students about it. While there, she was in a car with her brother and former IU basketball star Luke Recker, whom she was dating at the time. Their car was hit by a drunken driver. The driver of their car was killed, and Craig was paralyzed. Her brother suffered brain damage.

Three years ago, senior Rachel Karess lost her best friend, a man with whom she'd shared a backyard since childhood. Death didn't arrive swiftly for Brett Weinstein, Karess's "first friend." Sleep late, forget the fashion statement

·

Many of us on this campus pride ourselves on our appearance. There's nothing wrong with that. Thousands of students dress nicely every day with their wrinkle-free khaki pants, button-down collared shirts, makeup and tall shoes, every hair on their heads in place.

Opening day foretells things to come

·

Last Monday was a special day for me, and for many students on this campus. Not only was the men's college basketball championship game that night, but most major league baseball teams played their opening games. I celebrated by taking the day off and watching the Chicago Cubs play their first game of the season.

Enough with the Australian cliches

·

Before I left Australia, I was told I might encounter a few Americans who were ignorant to the ins and outs of the Australian lifestyle. Little did I know that those few would actually account for 90 percent of the population.

Stop suburban sprawl

·

It probably seemed innocent enough in the 1950s when people started to move to suburbs in droves. But if Washington, D.C., knew then what it knows now, it would have realized the peasants were revolting.

How real writers work

·

Writing is my hobby. "Real" writers sometimes get mad when I tell them that. I write novels, and get them published if I'm lucky, but I don't consider myself the stereotypical novelist. I don't smoke cigarettes. I don't drink myself sick every night. I don't have talent. And although I'm pretty sure the world is out to get me, I don't think that it misunderstands me to the point that I'm driven to a typewriter.

Hate should not be common practice

·

Every so often I do things that remind me of why I believe in certain things. These little explorations into my soul usually happen when I least expect them. My latest soul searching came after I accidentally stumbled upon the anti-liberal Web site LiberalWatch.org.

Law student Robert Brandt said he thought his smoke alarm was malfunctioning when it went off early Sunday morning. After fumbling with it, he looked out the window of his third-floor apartment and found that he was wrong. Seeing smoke outside, he got dressed and went to the front door -- his apartment's only exit -- to leave. "I opened the door and got hit with a wall of smoke," he said.
